Hockey Announces Team Awards For 2018-19 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University hockey program distributed team awards for the 2018-19 campaign. This after posting a record of 25-11-5 record on the year and reaching their first NCAA Tournament in 29 years. Nine members of the program were awarded the nine team awards for their successes throughout the 2018-19 season.
Earning the Jack Gregory Scholar-Athlete Award was senior Adam Smith. A native of Sharon, Ontario, Smith holds a 3.441 cumulative grade point average and graduated with an Individualized Business degree. Smith was also named WCHA All-Academic for his senior season. The Jack Gregory Scholar-Athlete Award is named after the 12-year Bowling Green Athletics Director and Bowling Green Athletics Hall of Fame member. Gregory also served as the Director of Athletics in 1984, when the Falcons won their National Championship.
Senior captain of the 2018-19 season Stephen Baylis was honored with the Dr. Ron Zwierlein Leadership Award. On the season, Baylis tallied 22 points by eight goals and 14 assists in 37 games, and tallied first his career hat trick and an additional assist for four points in an 8-2 victory at Mercyhurst to start the season (Oct. 6). The Leadership Award is named after Dr. Ron Zwierlein, former Freddie Falcon and Bowling Green Director of Athletics from 1994-99.
The recipient of the 2018-19 Sam Cooper Leading Scorer Award was sophomore forward Max Johnson. A native of Lakeville, Minnesota, Johnson led the Falcons posting 43 points by 19 goals and 24 assists. The Leading Scorer Award is named after longtime professor and BGSU Athletics Hall of Famer Sam Cooper, who was an instrumental piece in the start of the Bowling Green hockey program.
Senior blueliners Chris Pohlkamp and Connor McDonald were recognized as co-recipients of the Howard Brown Coaches Award. A native of Baxter, Minnesota, Pohlkamp tallied 11 assists for 11 points on the year. McDonald, a native of Westerville, Ohio recorded eight points via one goal and seven assists. Both seniors appeared in all 41 games for the Falcons during the 2018-19 campaign. After serving as a host family for hockey players as they attended BGSU, the Coaches Award is named after Bowling Green community member Howard Brown.
For his continuous great work in service to the program as a student equipment manager, the Dr. Tom Wojciechowski Recognition Award was presented to Colter Gilbert. Named after longtime hockey physician and dedicated team doctor, the Recognition Award is presented for distinguished service to the program.
After marking 6 points in his sophomore campaign, and improving to 14 in his junior season including seven playoff points, forward Frederic Letourneau was named winner of the Bill and Helen Lloyd Most Improved Player Award. The native of Montreal, Quebec tallied seven goals and seven assists on the season and was named Second Star of the 2019 WCHA Championship game. Bill Lloyd, a 1948 graduate of BGSU and his wife Helen are dedicated supporters of the Falcon Hockey program and the namesake of the Most Improved Player Award.
Freshman Taylor Schneider, was named the 2018-19 Rookie of the Year. Schneider appeared in 40 of 41 games for Bowling Green on the campaign. The native of Lakeville, Minnesota recorded seven goals and six assists for 13 points. He tallied his first career point on an assist in the first game of the season (8-2 win at Mercyhurst, Oct. 6), and recorded his first career goal in a 6-2 victory at Western Michigan (Oct. 9).
Rounding out this year's team awards is the winner of both the Jim Ruehl Best Defensive Player and Jim Sears Most Valuable Player Awards, junior goaltender Ryan Bednard. This following a season in which the Macomb, Michigan native appeared in 32 games posting a record of 20-8-4. Bednard posted the lowest single season goals-against-average in program history (1.77), and the second best save percentage of .927 over his 32 starts. He made 741 saves allowing the fewest goals in a single season with just 58 and became the program leader in career goals-against-average at 2.06 while rising from third to second all-time in save percentage (.918). Bednard also recorded three shutouts on the season bringing his career total up to seven (tied for second all-time in shutouts).
An award named after the former director of the BGSU Ice Arena and CCHA Commissioner in 1984, the Defensive Player Award is named in honor of Jim Ruehl. The Jim Sears Most Valuable Player Award is named after Sears who served as a host for hockey players as they attended BGSU.
