BG Battles Back, But Falls Just Short, at Purdue
December 13, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Falcons cut a 15-point deficit to just 2 points before succumbing, 79-73
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – An early deficit proved to be a little too much for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to overcome Sunday afternoon (Dec. 13), as the Falcons fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, 79-73, to Purdue University. The non-conference game was held at Mackey Arena.
BGSU is now 4-1 on the young season, while the Boilermakers improve to 3-1 on the year.
The Falcons fell into an early double-digit hole, and spent the entire game trying to dig out of it. The Boilermakers took an early 12-point lead, and Purdue led by as many as 15 in the third quarter. BGSU battled all the way back to within two points on several occasions in the fourth period, but couldn't quite get over the hump.
Sophomore Elissa Brett and freshman Lexi Fleming each had 15 points apiece for BGSU, while junior Kadie Hempfling (14) and senior Angela Perry (12) rounded out the Falcons' double-digit scorers.
Purdue got a game-high 25 points, including four three-point field goals, from Brooke Moore, while Tamara Farquhar and Madison Layden scored 13 points each and Kayana Traylor added 12.
The Falcons shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, and BGSU had an advantage in points off turnovers for the fifth time in as many games this season.
Both teams made 26 field goals, and both teams connected nine times from the arc, but it took BGSU 12 more shots (including five more triple tries) to get there.
Purdue made 18 free throws to the Falcons' 12, and the Boilers had a 36-31 rebounding advantage. BGSU had 12 offensive boards to Purdue's 10 on the day.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"Other than our start, I thought we played and competed at a very high level. We gave ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter. We will learn a lot from this game moving forward."
FIRST QUARTER
• The hosts got out to a fast start, scoring the game's first seven points, with a corner three by Brooke Moore followed by a layup by Ra Shaya Kyle. Sophomore Elissa Brett got the Falcons on the board with a layup at the 6:55 mark, and a putback by senior Angela Perry cut Purdue's lead to 9-4. But, Kyle's putback began another 7-0 run for the hosts.
• Moore hit a layup, then fed Madison Layden for a bucket, prompting a BGSU timeout midway through the period. A free throw moments later gave the hosts a16-4 lead.
• Freshman Lexi Fleming knocked down a corner three, but Layden came right back with a triple of her own. Junior Kadie Hempfling got a layup to go, but Moore's jumper made it a 21-9 game.
• But, freshman Kenzie Lewis found Hempfling for a three-pointer, and when Hempfling spotted Fort Wayne, Ind., native Madisen Parker for another three-ball, BG had cut the deficit to six. Kyle's layup in the waning seconds of the quarter gave the hosts a 23-15 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• That late first-quarter bucket began another run for the home team, as Tamara Farquhar hit a foul-line jumper on Purdue's first possession of the second quarter, then scored inside just over a minute later. A free throw made it a 7-0 run before redshirt freshman Macy Spielman found Hempfling for a three-pointer.
• Moore answered with a triple of her own, but Spielman answered that by hitting a shot from several feet beyond the arc. Her first career points cut BG's deficit to 10, at 31-21.
• A pair of Lewis shots from the stripe cut into the Falcons' deficit, and Perry's free throw at the 4:42 mark narrowed the gap to seven. But, Layden scored five of the game's next six points, including a trey that put Purdue up by 11, 36-25.
• Brett's left-wing three-ball, however, was followed by a second-chance layup by Perry, but Layden pulled up and hit a three on the break to give her team a 39-30 lead.
• After sophomore Olivia Trice found Perry for a turnaround jump shot, Moore hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of the half, and the Boilers took a 43-32 lead into the break.
• Purdue shot 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the field, including a 6-for-11 (54.5%) effort from the arc, in the opening half.
THIRD QUARTER
• Hempfling's handoff resulted in a Fleming three-pointer on the opening possession of the quarter, and the teams then traded buckets over the next four minutes. Lewis, Fleming and Perry all scored in the paint during that stretch.
• But, at the other end of the court, Farquhar scored three buckets in the first four minutes of the half, with Kayana Traylor connecting from long range. Farquhar's third basket gave her team a 52-41 lead with 6:02 left in the quarter.
• Lewis got to the line and made a pair of shots, and after Moore hit from the arc, Spielman found Fleming cutting to the basket for an easy layup. But, Moore was fouled on a three-point try, hitting all three resulting shots from the stripe, and another Farquhar hoop gave Purdue a 15-point lead, the largest of the game, with 3:38 on the clock.
• The margin was 15 again before Perry got to the line and hit a pair of shots with 1:35 left in the quarter. Then, Brett split a pair of defenders for a layup that cut the Falcons' deficit to 62-51 after three periods.
FOURTH QUARTER
• After scoring the last four points of the third quarter, BGSU would score the first nine of the fourth. Fleming scored on BG's first possession, getting fouled just seven seconds into the period and making a free throw. Hempfling scored on a driving layup, and after a Purdue turnover, the hosts used a timeout.
• But, the timeout did not slow the Falcons, as Hempfling worked a give-and-go with Brett, taking the return pass and hitting a short-corner jumper. The deficit was just six points, 62-56, with over eight minutes to go.
• On an attempted steal which would have resulted in a fast-break opportunity for the Falcons, Fleming was called for her fourth foul and was forced to head to the bench with 8:19 on the clock, but the visitors kept coming.Â
• BG got three looks, and a pair of offensive rebounds, on the next possession, but could not convert, but Lewis blocked a Purdue layup try, then drove and dished to Hempfling for a layup that made it a 62-58 game.
• Moore missed a fadeaway jumper, Parker grabbed the rebound and Brett hit a layup to cut the deficit to just two points. That bucket gave the Falcons a 13-0 run, before Traylor's free throws snapped her team's scoreless streak at nearly six minutes (5:56, to be exact).
• Brett scored inside again, but Traylor answered with an and-one layup, with the charity toss giving the Boilers a 67-62 lead. But, Trice found Parker for a three-pointer that once again made it a two-point game, this time with 4:54 to go.
• Fatou Diagne, however, scored for the home team, and after a Brett free throw, Jenelle Grant's corner three gave the Boilers a 72-66 lead with 3:21 on the clock. The Falcons forced turnovers on Purdue's next two possessions, taking advantage of the second miscue when Brett's three-point try bounced around the rim and in. That bucket, with 1:05 remaining, cut the deficit to three.
• But, Purdue used nearly all of the shot clock on the next possession, and Traylor banked home a runner with 36 seconds left. After a BG miss, Moore was fouled and hit two shots from the stripe with 26.0 seconds to go, making it a 76-69 game.
• Fleming hit a layup and also converted a pair of free throws, but the Falcons could not get closer than five points over the final half-minute of play.
