Freshman whiffs 17 in complete-game one-hitter
You'd be hard pressed to find a player who had a better collegiate debut than Payton Gottshall. The Bowling Green State University freshman fired a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 17 batters, as the Falcons downed Tennessee Tech, 3-1, in the 2020 season opener on Friday afternoon (Feb. 14).
In the second game of the day, a late rally fell just short as the Falcons dropped an 8-6 decision to Indiana State. Both games were part of day-one action at the Chattanooga Challenge in Chattanooga, Tenn.
BGSU outhit TTU, 7-1, in Friday's first game. While a youngster led the Falcons in the circle, it was the BG veterans leading the way at the plate. BG juniors and seniors combined for six of the falcons' seven hits, as well as all three runs scored and all three RBI.
Junior Nikki Sorgi's sixth-inning home run broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the winning run vs. the Golden Eagles.
In the nightcap, an early deficit proved to be too much for the Falcons to overcome as BG fell, 8-6, to Indiana State. Senior Logan Everett hit a three-run homer, and classmate Madi McCoy had two hits and scored two runs, but BG could not come all the way back after falling behind by five runs on two separate occasions.
Senior Taylor Blevins was 3-for-6 with a pair of extra-base hits on the day, while junior Payton Hamm went 3-for-7. Everett led the Falcons with four RBI, while Sorgi had a double and a homer on Friday.
GOTTSHALL GETS 'EM OUT
• In her collegiate debut, freshman Payton Gottshall faced 23 TTU batters. She allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 17.
• Gottshall struck out at least two batters in all seven innings, and struck out the side three times.
• She fanned nine consecutive batters beginning with the final hitter of the second inning. After allowing her only hit of the game, a solo homer, she got an inning-ending grounder to second base in the fifth inning, then struck out five-straight batters before the final hitter popped up to short to end the game.
• The top-four hitters in the TTU order went a combined 0-for-12 with 11 strikeouts.
• Golden Eagle batters had struck out a total of 18 times in six games this season, prior to whiffing 17 times vs. Gottshall.
THE MOST SINCE...
• Gottshall's total of 17 strikeouts is the highest by a BG pitcher since Meredith Miller struck out 17 hitters in an eight-inning victory over Gardner-Webb last season.
• BGSU single-game records are incomplete, but no Falcon has had more than 17 strikeouts in a game since at least 1995.
Â
SENIORS STEP UP
• Senior Taylor Blevins entered Friday's action with a career total of three extra-base hits (all doubles), and she nearly matched that total on the first day of the season. Blevins had a double vs. TTU and a triple against ISU.
• Fellow senior Logan Everett had three RBI during the 2019 season, but drove home four runs on Friday. She knocked in a run in the opener, then had a three-run homer – the second round-tripper of her career – against the Sycamores.
BGSU-TTU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The starting pitchers – Gottshall and TTU's Haeli Bryson – fired matching goose eggs through four innings. Gottshall allowed only one baserunner in that time, a one-out walk in the second inning.
• BG put three baserunners aboard in the first four frames. In her first collegiate at-bat, freshman Greta L'Esperance reached on a one-out bunt single in the first inning, then promptly stole second.
• In the second, senior Logan Everett drew a two-out walk, and in the fourth, junior Payton Hamm singled with two down. But, all three runners were stranded.
• Meanwhile, Gottshall struck out the first and last batters in each of the first two innings. She ended the second frame by getting Alexis Trimiar to swing and miss, and that was the first of nine consecutive K's for the Falcon freshman.
• But, in the fifth, Trimiar broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-out solo homer to left.
• The Falcons responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Junior Sarah Gonzalez singled with one out, took second on a groundout and went to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, senior Taylor Blevins doubled to right-center to plate Gonzalez and tie the game.
• Gottshall struck out the side in the sixth, and junior Nikki Sorgi homered with one down in the bottom of the inning for what would prove to be the winning run.
• Hamm followed Sorgi's homer with a single, and one out later, she took second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Everett came through with a single to left-center that scored Hamm for a two-run lead.
• In the seventh, Gottshall struck out the first two hitters, then got a TTU pinch-hitter to pop up to short to end the game.
BGSU-ISU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Sycamores struck for three runs in the top of the first inning off of BG starter Hannah Davies. The big blow was a two-run homer off the bat of Bella Peterson.
• Blevins singled to begin the BG first, but a L'Esperance scorcher was hit directly at the second baseman, resulting in a double play. Sorgi doubled to begin the second inning, but was stranded there.
• In the BG third, Gonzalez led off with a single, and L'Esperance walked with two down, but ISU starter Abbey Kruzel got out of the jam.
• After the first inning, Davies allowed only a single and a walk over the next three frames. She faced just one batter over the minimum in that time, as Everett gunned down a runner attempting to steal in the second.
• But, the Sycamores added to the lead in the fifth, scoring twice against junior Madison French to take a 5-0 advantage. ISU had two singles and a pair of walks in the inning.
• Blevins tripled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Kruzel got a ground ball to third to end the inning.
• In the sixth, French retired the side in order, and the Falcons cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning. Senior Madi McCoy singled and Sorgi walked. Kruzel retired the next two hitters, but after a passed ball, Everett clubbed a three-run homer to cut BG's deficit to two.
• But, in the seventh, the Sycamores got those three runs back, with a pair of errors aiding the ISU cause.
• Trailing by five runs entering the bottom of the seventh, BG actually wound up getting the potential winning run to the plate before succumbing. Blevins was hit by a pitch with one-out, and L'Esperance walked. A McCoy single plated Blevins, and one out later, Hamm's single scored both L'Esperance and McCoy.
• Redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees followed with a single to put runners at the corners, but ISU reliever Gabbi Schnaiter was able to get a treiktout to end the game.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons continue action in the Chattanooga Challenge with a pair of games on Saturday (Feb. 15). BGSU will take on Lipscomb in an 11:00 a.m. start, before meeting host Chattanooga in a game slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
• Both of Saturday's games are slated to have live stats, with the Chattanooga contest aired on ESPN3.
• BG wraps up weekend action with a Sunday (Feb. 16) game against Western Kentucky, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
