Falcons Host CMU Friday Before Hitting The Road For WVU

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will compete in its first double weekend of the year, hosting Central Michigan Friday before hitting the road to compete in a quad meet Sunday at West Virginia. Coming off a season-best team score of 194.550 and wins over Temple and Illinois State, the Falcons have momentum heading into the weekend.
Friday night's meet is the annual Pink Meet, to raise awareness of breast cancer. Free pink scrunchies will be handed out to fans. It will also serve as the annual Military Appreciation Night. It is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm at Anderson Arena.
Sunday, the team will compete at West Virginia -- against Towson, Western Michigan and the hosts. BGSU already faced Western Michigan once this year, dropping a Mid-American Conference meet in Kalamazoo, Mich. That meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.

THE HISTORY
Central Michigan holds a 32-16 lead in the all-time series against BGSU but the Falcons did win the last time the two teams met in Anderson Arena in 2018. The Falcons scored a 195.400 to narrowly defeat the Chippewas with a 195.375. Bowling Green, in fact is 2-1 in the past three meets between the two programs. A year ago, CMU scored 195.775 to beat BGSU with a 193.050.
West Virginia holds a 9-5 record all-time against Bowling Green but the two teams have not faced off since 2016. In that meet, held at West Virginia, the Falcons scored 195.725 but the Mountaineers won with a 196.800. WVU, in fact, has won the past eight meetings since Bowling Green won twice in 1984.
BGSU is 1-3 all-time against Towson but did win in Anderson Arena a year ago with a 194.375 team score, compared to 193.025. Against Western Michigan, the Falcons are 28-18-1 all-time, including a victory a year ago and a loss earlier this season.
TAKING STEPS EACH TIME OUT
Since scoring a 191.025 at Rutgers in the team's second meet of the year, the Falcons have improved their team score each time out. Bowling Green followed that with a 192.725 at Ball State, a 193.975 at Western Michigan, and then a season-best 194.550 last week at home against Illinois State and Temple.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Redshirt freshman Tess Muir made her return to the lineup against Eastern Michigan. Muir competed on vault, beam and floor a year ago until an injury ended her season after just four meets. She took to the balance beam against EMU and posted a personal best score of 9.775. A year ago, her best score on beam was 9.625 through the first four meets.
Junior Alex Fochler missed the entire 2019 season after performing on uneven bars in 2018. She returned to the lineup this year. After a slow start against Eastern Michigan, she earned medalist honors in back-to-back meets at Rutgers and at Ball State. She recorded scores of 9.850 and 9.800 in those two contests.
Redshirt sophomore Samantha Marion earned MAC Specialist Of The Week honors following her performance at Eastern Michigan and she has competed on beam and vault in each of the first five meets. Marion had not competed in her first two years at Bowling Green due to injuries.
NEVER TOO EARLY
While the season has yet to reach the halfway mark, a handful of Falcons are already making larger impacts than they previously have.
Senior Jovannah East is averaging a 9.688 on bars and a 9.865 on floor, both career bests. Another senior, Taylor Worthington, is scoring 9.794 on beam, ahead of her average of 9.658 in 2019, and easily a career-best.
Junior Alex Fochler is averaging a 9.642 on floor, competing in the event for the first time in her career. She also has posted a career-best 9.620 average on bars. Junior Elena Lawson is posting career-best averages on vault (9.715), bars (9.465) and floor (9.790), while junior Samantha Marion is in the lineup for the first time in her career, scoring a 9.785 on vault and a 9.505 on beam.
Sophomore Katelyn Goldstrom competed in just one rotation a year ago, but is taking part in three this year. Her average of 9.410 on bars is markedly better than her 9.150 a year ago, while she is also competing on vault and floor, averaging a 9.570 on the latter.

EAST'S OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jovannah East will go down as one of the greatest gymnasts in BGSU history. Just the second gymnast to qualify for the NCAA National Championships, East has put together a remarkable career through her first 3+ years. East's career accomplishments include the following:
