January 02, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BGSU improves to 3-0 in the MAC, 7-1 on the season
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team ended the first quarter on a double-digit run Saturday night (Jan. 2), and the Falcons never looked back. BGSU rolled along to an 89-55 road win over Ball State University in Mid-American Conference action at Worthen Arena.
Â
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• With Saturday's victory, the Falcons have matched the MAC win total for all of last year. BGSU went 3-15 in conference play last season, and improved to a perfect 3-0 in the league in 2020-21 with the win in Muncie.
The Falcons, now 7-1 overall, scored the final 11 points of the opening quarter to take a 19-8 lead after 10 minutes. Three three-point field goals in the first three minutes of the second period made it a 20-4 run, and the Falcons rolled right along.
BGSU led by 16 points at the half, by 31 after three quarters and by 34 on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, including when the final horn sounded.
Freshmen Lexi Fleming and Nyla Hampton led four Falcon double-digit scorers with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Senior Madisen Parker, the team's lone Indiana native, had 15 points off the bench, while sophomore Elissa Brett scored 11.
For the Cardinals (3-4, 1-2 MAC), Oshlynn Brown had a team-leading 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
BGSU forced Ball State to commit 29 turnovers, and the Falcons had a whopping 38-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was a great team win. I was very proud of our defensive effort tonight, and I loved the way our whole team was engaged and competed throughout the entire game."
SEVEN AND ONE
• BGSU's win improved the Falcons' overall record to 7-1 on the young season, marking the third time in the last decade that BGSU has won seven of the first eight games. Both the 2013-14 and '17-18 teams began the year at 7-1.
THREE AND OH
• As mentioned above, the Falcons are now 3-0 in MAC play. BGSU has matched the conference win total for all of last season, as the 2019-20 Falcons went 3-15 in league action.
• BG is off to a 3-0 start in the MAC for the first time since 2013-14, when the Falcons began league action with a 4-0 record en route to a 17-1 conference mark and a MAC regular-season championship.
FIRST QUARTER
• Both teams struggled offensively in the game's first few minutes. BGSU scored on just one of the first four possessions of the night, as freshman Lexi Fleming hit a pull-up jumper with 75 seconds gone. Sydney Freeman answered with a three-pointer for the hosts, but a Fleming steal led to a BG break the other way, and sophomore Elissa Brett was fouled and hit both shots from the line. The Falcons led, 4-3, and BG never trailed again.
• Freshman Nyla Hampton hit a free throw, then found Fleming for a three-pointer and an 8-3 lead. The Falcons led by that same score at the night's first media timeout.
• Oshlynn Brown scored inside for the hosts, and Essence Booker knocked down a long-distance shot, tying the game at 8-8. But, freshman Kenzie Lewis drained a free throw just eight seconds later, beginning that 11-0 run to end the quarter.
• Brett ripped the ball away from Brown, and the ensuing possession saw Fleming feed senior Angela Perry for a bucket off glass. Then, Brett found senior Madisen Parker for a left-wing three-pointer, and Hampton's second-chance floater gave the Falcons a 16-8 lead.
• With just under a minute remaining in the period, Hampton's 'extra pass' found a wide-open Parker, this time on the right wing, and the senior swished another long-range try.
SECOND QUARTER
• That 11-0 run quickly turned into a 20-4 surge, as the Falcons hit three more three-pointers in the first 2:42 of the second quarter. Booker and Anna Clephane each knocked down jumpers for the home team, but Parker answered Booker's two-pointer with a three-pointer, and Brett did the same after Clephane's bucket. A Brett defensive rebound resulted in Lewis spotting junior Kadie Hempfling for yet another try, and the Falcons had a 28-12 lead.
• BSU scored the next three points, but Fleming handed the ball off to Hempfling, received a return pass and buried another triple try at the 5:22 mark. Then, a steal and layup by Hampton gave the Falcons a 33-15 lead and prompted a Ball State timeout midway through the quarter.
• The Falcons' lead reached 20 points on a pair of Perry free throws with 3:03 left before halftime. The Cardinals ended the half on a 5-1 run to make it a 16-point game, 36-20, at the intermission.
• BGSU shot just 33.3% in the second quarter, going 5-for-15, but still outscored the Cardinals by five points, 17-12. BSU was only 4-of-14 (28.6%) from the floor in the period.Â
THIRD QUARTER
• The Falcons had a pair of shots blocked on the opening possession of the quarter, but a Lewis inbounds pass found Fleming at the top of the arc, and Fleming's shot was on the mark to beat the shot-clock buzzer. Brown answerd with a three-point play, but Hampton made a free throw, then converted a wide-open layup after a Lewis steal.
• BG led by 19, but Thelma Dis Agustsdottir's jumper began a quick 5-0 run for the hosts, as Clephane followed with a three-point play of her own. Fleming split a pair of free throws, but Brown's layup got the Cards within 13 points with seven minutes left in the quarter.
• But, BG broke the Ball State press, leading to a Hampton layup, and Fleming then scored the game's next five points, getting herself to the line before draining a corner three for a 50-30 BG lead. Maliah Howard-Bass answered with a long-distance shot, but Hampton came back with a driving layup, and Perry's putback put the lead over 20 points for the first time.
• Parker was fouled on a three-point try, knocking down all three shots, and two Hampton charity tosses made it a 9-0 run and a 59-33 lead with 3:22 left in the period.
• Blake Smith snapped that BG run, but Hampton got herself back to the line on each of the next two possessions, capping a 6-for-6 performance at the stripe in a 73-second span. Brown converted a pair from the line, but so did Brett. Fleming took a charge, then found an open Parker for a three-pointer in the final minute of the period, and the lead was over 30 points, at 68-37.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Falcons scored the first three points of the fourth period, as a driving layup by Brett was followed by a Hempfling free throw, and the lead was 34 points for the first of six times.
• Each time the Cardinals attempted to chip away at that lead, BG had an answer. The Falcons broke the press and Fleming found senior Clare Glowniak for an easy layup, and moments later, Fleming stole the ball and made a layup of her own. Redshirt freshman Macy Spielman fed Perry for a bucket, and Hampton spotted Brett for a fast-break layup.
• Sophomore Olivia Trice grabbed an offensive board, was fouled and sank a free throw, and Trice then knocked down a driving layup. The lead fell under 30 points, but Trice hit a three-pointer, and senior Mari Hill followed with a layup after a Spielman steal.
• BG's final points came when redshirt soph Molly Dever grabbed a teammate's missed shot and put the ball back up and in.
TURN THEM OVER...
• BGSU has had an advantage in points off turnovers in each of the season's first eight games. On Saturday, as mentioned, the Falcons had a 38-8 advantage in that category. BG turned the ball over just 12 times while forcing the Cards into 29 turnovers.
• Through eight games, the Falcons have scored a total of 173 points off turnovers (21.6 per game), compared to 73 (9.1 per game) by the opponents.
...AND GET TO THE LINE
• The Falcons made more free throws than Ball State attempted on Saturday. BGSU went 24-of-31 from the stripe, for a success rate of 77.4%. The Cardinals took 22 free throws, making 12 (54.5%) on the evening.
• BGSU was 15-of-17 from the line in the third quarter alone.
