BGSU picks up 10th overall win of the season
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run and maintained control throughout the final 30 minutes, as the Falcons downed the University of Akron, 66-57, Wednesday night (Jan. 20).
With the win at the Stroh Center, the Falcons improve to 10-3 overall, and BGSU has moved into second place in the Mid-American Conference with a 6-2 league ledger.
Senior Madisen Parker and sophomore Elissa Brett each scored 13 points to pace a balanced BG attack, with junior Kadie Hempfling adding 11 points and reaching a career milestone. Freshman Lexi Fleming, who battled foul trouble and played fewer than 10 second-half minutes, rounded out BGSU's double-digit scorers with 10 points in the win.
The Zips (4-6, 1-6 MAC) were led by Molly Neitzel with 12 points. Brett and the BG defense held UA's top scorer, Jordyn Dawson, to just three points on the night.
Â
SOME OF THE MORE NOTEWORTHY NOTES ON A NOTEWORTHY NIGHT
• Kadie Hempfling, just a junior and not a point guard, recorded the 300th assist of her BGSU career on Wednesday night. Hempfling, who pulled down her 500th rebound earlier this month, is just the second player in program history with both 500 rebounds and 300 assists in her career. The other? BGSU Hall-of-Famer Kate Achter.
• The Falcons, as mentioned, have moved into second place in the MAC standings, in terms of winning percentage. (If you're one of those people who like to arrange your standings in terms of 'games back,' the argument can be made that BGSU is tied for first place with Kent State.)
• BGSU is now 6-2 in the MAC. With six conference victories, the Falcons have surpassed the league win total for the last two years combined. BG went 3-15 in MAC play last season and 2-16 the previous winter.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"Any win in this league is a good win. I'm proud of our kids; it seems like we keep finding different ways to win. Madisen Parker was really critical for us tonight, especially in the first half. Clare Glowniak gave us some important minutes during a stretch where we got some momentum back in the second half. And, Elissa Brett did a great job with hustle plays and finishing some critical possessions. I'm proud of our team's ability to find a way to win, and I'm also excited because I know we're going to be able to keep getting better."
FIRST QUARTER
• The first half of the opening quarter belonged to the defenses, to say the very least. Neither team scored until junior Kadie Hempfling took a pass from freshman Kenzie Lewis and knocked down a three-point try with a minute and 40 seconds gone. Gabrielle Brown-Mitchell tied the game with a long-distance try of her own at the 6:46 mark, and freshman Lexi Fleming's free throw gave the hosts a 4-3 lead 30 seconds later.
• Neither team scored again until Molly Neitzel's jumper put the Zips on top with 5:03 left in the quarter. It would be the only Akron lead of the night.
• After scoring just four points in the game's first 5:30, the Falcons would score eight points in a 51-second span. Sophomore Elissa Brett's corner three gave BG the lead for good, and Fleming, who had assisted on that Brett bucket, then stole the ball from Emma Tecca and hit a transition layup for a 9-5 lead. Molly Neitzel drilled a three-pointer to briefly get the visitors within one, but Hempfling's second three-ball of the quarter gave BG a 12-8 lead.
• Lonasia Brewer scored to make it a two-point game, but the Falcons then scored the next nine points to end the quarter. Fleming hit a floater, and senior Madisen Parker drained a long-range try, then found classmate Angela Perry inside for a turnaround one-hander.
• When Brett banked home a runner in the final seconds, the Falcons had a 21-10 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Perry kicked the ball out to Parker for a three-pointer, and Fleming's stop-start layup made it a 14-0 BGSU run and a 26-10 Falcon lead with 7:21 left in the half.
•  Akron finally ended a scoring drought of 6:15 when Brown-Mitchell hit a pair of free throws, but Lewis found senior Clare Glowniak for a layup and a 28-12 advantage. Jordyn Dawson's layup ended a stretch of 6:43 without a field goal for the visitors, and that bucket started a 7-0 run for the Zips which included a Tecca three.
• The Zips had cut the lead to single digits, but Parker took a Hempfling pass and knocked down a three-point try from the right corner while drawing a foul. The ensuing free throw completed a four-point play and gave BG a 31-19 lead with 3:42 left in the quarter.
• In the final minute of the half, after UA had crept within eight, Parker made another 'and-one' bucket, this time from inside the arc. Her layup and free throw restored a double-digit advantage, and for the second consecutive quarter, Brett hit a shot in the final seconds, giving BG a 38-25 lead at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Hempfling's driving layup with one minute gone in the third period gave the Falcons a 40-25 lead, but BGSU would then score just one point over the next five-plus minutes.
• Brett took two Akron charges in the first 91 seconds of the quarter, as the BG defense kept the Zips from making a huge dent in the BG lead, but a Molly Neitzel three-pointer cut the BG advantage to 11, and Fleming then was whistled for two quick fouls, giving her four for the game. She headed to the bench at the 7:11 mark.
• Brewer stole the ball and hit a layup, and Kendall Miller's layup cut the BG lead to 41-33. Then, however, neither team scored for nearly three minutes. Out of a timeout, Hempfling's cross-court pass resulted in a corner three from freshman Nyla Hampton.Â
• Brett was fouled on a drive and hit both charity tosses, and Perry drew af oul and made a pair of free throws just 30 seconds later. When Hampton came up with a steal and hit a sweet floater, BG's lead was 50-37. The Falcons took an 11-point lead into the fourth period, after Glowniak drew Dawson's fourth foul and knocked down a shot from the line.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hempfling lobbed the ball inside to Glowniak for a layup – and Hempfling's 300th career assist – just 24 seconds into the period, and Glowniak scored again just over a minute later, hitting a layup with three defenders around her.
• Glowniak stole the ball on back-to-back Akron possessions, and after a Brett steal, Glowniak drew a UA foul and hit a free throw that gave the Falcons a 57-40 lead.
• Fleming, after missing roughly 10 minutes of game time, hit a straightaway trey halfway through the period, giving the Brown and Orange a 60-42 advantage, and the freshman drove the baseline and found Brett in traffic for an and-one layup at the 4:01 mark. Brett's free throw made it an 18-point game once again, at 63-45, and BG still led by 15 with two minutes left, before the Zips ended the game on a 7-1 run to cut the final margin to single digits.
Â
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Zips had a slightly better field-goal percentage on the night, with a 37.9 percent success rate to BGSU's 37.3%. Both teams made 22 field goals, with BG taking one more shot (59) than Akron (58).
• The Falcons were 8-of-22 from three-point land, while UA was 7-of-22.
• BGSU, however, made nearly twice as many free throws as Akron attempted. The Falcons shot just 66.7% from the stripe, but hit 14 charity tosses in 21 attempts. UA was 6-of-8 from the line.
• The Falcons had a 42-34 advantage on the boards, and BG forced Akron into 22 turnovers while committing 19.
• The hosts had 14 steals and a 15-7 lead in points off turnovers.
• Madisen Parker had 13 points to tie for game honors, and led all players with a plus/minus rating of +20.Â
• Elissa Brett also had 13 points, adding eight rebounds. Kadie Hempfling had 11 points, five boards and three assists.
• Lexi Fleming, who battled foul trouble and played less than 10 minutes in the second half, still managed to hit double digits in the scoring column for the 13th time in as many career games. She is just the fourth player since 1993 – and the first freshman – to reach double figures in as many as 13-straight games to begin the season.
• Fleming had 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and four steals vs. the Zips.
• Senior Clare Glowniak scored eight points and added a pair of assists, while Nyla Hampton had six points, two assist and four steals.
• BGSU is now 10-3 on the season. With 10 overall wins, the Falcons have surpassed the total for all of last year. BG went 9-21 in the 2019-20 campaign.
• With her three assists on Wednesday night, Hempfling now has 300 in her career. She has moved past former teammate Sydney Lambert into sole possession of 10th place on that BGSU career list.
• Fleming had three steals in the game's first two-plus minutes, and Parker had 10 points in the second quarter alone.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return to the road this weekend, facing Miami on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23) in Oxford. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Millett Hall.
• Wednesday night's UA game began a stretch in which the Falcons play three out of four games at home to wrap up the month of January. After the trip to MU, BGSU will host Western Michigan next Wednesday (Jan. 27) before welcoming Toledo to town three days later (Jan. 30).
