BGSU scores early & often to complete sweep of season series
OXFORD, Ohio – Everything was clicking for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23). The Falcons scored early and often, and BGSU was never headed in an 87-52 win over Miami University in Mid-American Conference action at Millett Hall.
BGSU (11-3, 7-2 MAC) hit three-point field goals on each of the first three offensive possessions, taking a 9-0 lead with under two minutes gone. The Falcons led by scores of 22-4 after one quarter and 46-14 at halftime, and the Brown and Orange took a game-high 45-point lead early in the fourth quarter before the RedHawks (1-12, 0-9 MAC) chipped away at that lead against the Falcons' bench to produce the final 35-point margin.
Junior Kadie Hempfling, one of 13 Falcons to hit a shot from the field in the win, led the Falcons with 16 points, while freshman Lexi Fleming had 15 points and sophomore Elissa Brett 10.
BGSU led by a 70-28 score after three quarters, and a three-pointer by sophomore Olivia Trice gave the Falcons a 77-32 lead with 7:36 to go in the fourth. The teams traded hoops as another Trice bucket made it 79-34 a minute later, before MU narrowed the gap.
For the RedHawks, Katie Davidson scored a game-high 19 points, while Peyton Scott had 17. That duo scored 18 of their 36 combined points in the fourth quarter, long after the game had been decided.
Â
NOTE OF THE DAY: ROAD WARRIORS
• BGSU is now 6-2 on the road this season, including 4-1 in MAC road games. The Falcons have topped the road win total for the last two seasons combined, as BGSU went 3-12 on the road last year and 2-13 in 2018-19.
• In MAC road games, the Falcons have doubled the road win total for the previous three seasons combined. BGSU went 2-25 in those three seasons, prior to the 4-1 league road record this year to date.
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY: "ALEXA, WHAT'S A PHRASE FOR 'ROAD WARRIORS,' ONLY BETTER?"'
• Prior to the 2020-21 season, the Falcons had won three MAC road games by 10 points or more in the last six years. The win at Miami was BGSU's fourth double-digit MAC road victory in the month of January.
The Falcons shot a season-best 54.0 percent from the field, and BG's point total was the second highest of the year. Each of the Falcons' six highest scoring totals this season have come on the road.
BGSU had a 30-11 advantage in points off turnovers, leading that category for the 13th time in 14 games this season. The Falcons forced 18 Miami turnovers, while committing 14 themselves. Nine of BG's 14 turnovers came in the second half, including five in the fourth quarter, when the outcome was no longer in doubt.

QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"Today was a great team win. I loved our focus and our consistency throughout the game, both defensively and offensively."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons set the tone early, as freshman Nyla Hampton disrupted Miami's opening possession, leading to a RedHawk turnover. At the other end of the court, fellow freshman Lexi Fleming's pass led to a corner three by sophomore Elissa Brett, and BGSU had the lead for good.
• Junior Kadie Hempfling drained three-point tries on the next two possessions, taking a Brett pass and connecting from just right of center, then knocking down a catch-and-shoot three-ball from a Fleming feed. BG was averaging three points per possession, and the RedHawks, down 9-0, took a timeout with 8:10 on the clock.
• A foul-line jumper by Tihanna Fulton put the home team on the board at the 7:20 mark, beginning a brief 4-0 run for Miami, but Brett dished to Hampton for a transition layup, and Hempfling kicked the ball out to Fleming for a three-pointer. When Hempfling hit a jumper, the Falcons had a 16-4 lead.
• Senior Angela Perry entered the game, and promptly hit one of her patented turnaround one-handers. Perry scored on back-to-back possessions, as she took a pass from freshman Kenzie Lewis and converted a layup, and the RedHawks were forced to burn another timeout.
• Perry displayed her prowess at both ends of the court, with a steal in the final minute of the quarter. Off of that steal, Hampton hit a driving layup in the waning seconds of the period to give the Orange and Brown a 22-4 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Perry hit a free throw on BG's opening possession of the quarter, and after Katie Davidson scored for the hosts, the Falcons went on a 10-0 run.
• Hempfling hit a sweet reverse layup to beat the shot-clock horn, and Lewis grabbed a defensive rebound and found Fleming, who pulled up and hit a long three-pointer. Hempfling spotted senior Clare Glowniak for a foul-line jumper, and another Lewis defensive board resulted in Glowniak spotting Brett for an and-one layup. Brett's free throw gave BGSU a 33-6 lead at the 6:40 mark.
• Senior Madisen Parker hit a three-pointer, and moments later, two Glowniak charity tosses were followed by a Hampton driving layup, giving BG a 40-10 lead.
• Peyton Scott scored the game's next four points, but Perry scored in the paint, Hempfling converted a baseline drive and Lewis drove the lane and banked home a shot in the final seconds, for a 46-14 lead at the half.
Â
THIRD QUARTER
• Just nine seconds into the second half, Fleming knocked down a three-point try. After a Miami hoop, buckets in the paint by Hempfling and Fleming gave the Falcons a 7-2 run and a 53-16 lead.
• Neither team scored for over two minutes, before Fleming got to the line and hit a pair of shots. The teams traded points over the next few possessions, with Brett scoring on the break and Fleming hitting a spinning jumper. Then, after a Brett steal, the sophomore knocked down a right-side jumper for a 40-point lead, 61-21.
• Glowniak scored four third-quarter points, and Parker drained a left-win three-ball. When Hampton grabbed a defensive rebound and found Hempfling ahead of the pack for a layup, the Falcons had a 70-28 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Four of the Falcons' five starters sat out the entire fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman Macy Spielman drove toward the lane and hit a spinning jumper on BG's first possession, and Hampton's steal and score made it a 74-32 game with eight minutes to play.
• Spielman stole the ball and fired it ahead to sophomore Olivia Trice for a three-pointer and a 45-point lead, and after Fulton hit a jumper, Trice quickly answered with a layup.
• Senior Mari Hill found freshman Sophie Dziekan for an 'and-one' layup, and Dziekan's free throw completed the three-point play. Hill grabbed a loose ball and hit a foul-line jumper, putting BG ahead, 84-40, with 3:56 to go.
• From there, MU ended the game on a 12-3 run. The 'Hawks scored 10-straight points, before Spielman found redshirt sophomore Molly Dever for a three-pointer that capped the BG scoring for the day.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons, as mentioned, shot a season-high 54.0% from the field, hitting 34 shots in 63 attempts. BGSU was 10-of-20 from three-point range.

• BGSU went 9-of-10 at the free-throw line, while MU was 4-for-4.
• The Falcons scored on the first three possessions of each half, with a total of 16 points on those possessions.
