Sophomore comes up B!G at both ends of floor as Falcons post 10th MAC win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio  – Sophomore Elissa Brett led the way at both ends of the floor Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6), as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team defeated Ohio University, 69-53, in Mid-American Conference action at the Stroh Center.
Brett had game-high totals in both scoring and rebounding for the Falcons (14-4, 10-3 MAC). She had a career-best 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and the second of her BG career.
At the other end of the court, Brett was the primary defender on Ohio's Cierra Hooks, who entered the game ranked among the nation's scoring leaders with 26.6 points per game. Brett & the Falcons held Hooks to 12 points and forced her into nine turnovers.
The Falcons held the Bobcats (10-6, 8-5 MAC) to a season-low point total. BGSU forced the visitors into 23 turnovers, and while the hosts turned the ball over 19 times themselves, BG had a 25-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
Freshman Nyla Hampton had 14 points and junior Kadie Hempfling 13 for the Falcons, with Hempfling adding nine rebounds, four assists and four steals. Freshman Kenzie Lewis had seven points on perfect 3-for-3 shooting, and added a game-high seven assists.
Ohio got 13 points from both Madi Mace and Caitlyn Kroll, with Hooks adding 12.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• As of mid-afternoon on Saturday, the Falcons are one of just 12 women's basketball programs in the nation with 10 or more conference wins.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"The biggest takeaway from today's game was our defensive effort. We were coming off a loss at Northern Illinois where I thought we had a spectacular first half, defensively, and then a really poor second half. Ohio's a prolific offensive team, and I thought as a unit, we maintained our defensive presence throughout the whole game."
"Elissa was outstanding today. I think she's an elite defender, because she is able to guard a one through a five. She has great defensive versatility, which really benefits our team. Cece Hooks is such a good scorer, but I thought we did a great job on her as a team today. Elissa had a great all-around game."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons never trailed in Saturday's win. BGSU took the lead just over a minute into the contest, when freshman Kenzie Lewis found classmate Lexi Fleming for a three-pointer. Then, Lewis spotted Kadie Hempfling at the arc, and the junior's triple doubled the lead with two minutes gone.
• The Bobcats did not score until Caitlyn Kroll's layup over four minutes gone, but Lewis answered with a driving layup for an 8-2 BG lead. The visitors scored the next five points, with Madi Mace's three-ball cutting the Falcons' lead to 8-7, but freshman Nyla Hampton found Fleming for a long-range make and an 11-7 BGSU lead.
• Then, Lewis drove and whipped a pass to Hempfling for a corner three. Ohio's top scorer, Cierra Hooks, was injured with 2:36 left in the quarter as she lunged in an attempt to steal the ball. Hooks was forced to leave the game, but her team scored the next five points before sophomore Elissa Brett's pass reached Lewis for an and-one layup. The free throw gave the Falcons a 17-12 lead with just 0.9 seconds left in the quarter.
• Lewis was involved in five of BGSU's six first-quarter buckets, going 2-for-2 from the floor and dishing out three assists.
SECOND QUARTER
• Lewis opened the second-period scoring, cutting to the hoop and receiving a Hempfling pass for a layup and a 19-12 lead. After the Bobcats answered, Lewis fed senior Madisen Parker for a three-pointer and an eight-point advantage.
• Brett's driving layup in traffic made it an eight-point game once again, but the visitors then went on an 8-0 run to tie the contest. Mace scored all eight points during that stretch, hitting a pair of three-pointers before converting a driving layup with 4:10 on the clock.
• But, after a BG miss, Fleming grabbed the rebound and fired a pass out to Hampton for a three-pointer that gave the Falcons the lead for good. That triple began an 11-0 run in which Hampton and Brett combined to score every point.
• Brett split a pair of free throws, knocked down a long-range shot, and made two more shots from the stripe. When Hampton drove and banked a shot off glass and in, BGSU had a 35-24 lead with 1:23 left in the period.
• Hooks, back on the court after missing roughly 10 minutes of game time, hit a layup and then found Kroll for a bucket inside, and the 'Cats got a stop and looked to put more of a dent into the BG lead. But, in the waning seconds of the quarter, Hempfling stole the ball and fired it to Hampton for a layup in the final seconds, giving BG a 37-28 lead at the half.
• Brett scored eight points and Hampton seven in the second quarter, accounting for 75 percent of BGSU's 20 points.
• BGSU ended the half on a 13-4 surge after Ohio had tied the contest at 24-all.
THIRD QUARTER
• Hempfling's jumper opened the second-half scoring, and after Gabby Burris scored for the visitors, the junior hit a layup off of a Brett lob. Hempfling returned the favor, stealing the ball and finding Brett for a layup and a 43-30 lead.
• Brett hit a driving layup, and after a steal by senior Clare Glowniak, Lewis found Glowniak for a bucket. Parker's right-wing triple gave the Falcons a 50-30 lead, and a pair of Brett free throws capped a 13-0 run and gave the hosts a 22-point advantage, the largest of the game.
• A pair of Burris charity tosses ended that run, but Glowniak found Hampton for a layup. Kaylee Bambule's three-pointer began a quick 7-0 run for the visitors, with a pair of Hooks free throws making it a 54-39 game with 2:18 on the clock.
• Ohio stole the ball and looked to score again, but Fleming rebounded a missed shot and fired a pass ahead to Hampton for a quick transition jumper and a 56-39 lead. Brett hit three free throws in the final minute of the quarter to give the Brown and Orange a 59-41 lead after 30 minutes.
• BG forced the Bobcats into eight turnovers, including six by Hooks, in that third period, and the Falcons had an 11-2 lead in points off turnovers during that quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Bobcats scored the first six points of the quarter over a span of 3:40, with a Hooks steal and layup cutting BG's lead to 12 points, but Brett answered with a layup. Hooks hit a pair of free throws, but was called for her fourth foul with 5:41 left, and Hampton's three-pointer moments later gave BG a 64-49 lead.
• The 'Cats cut that BG lead to 13 on two occasions, but could not draw any closer. Brett knocked down a layup with 1:32 left after the Falcons had worked the clock, and with the shot clock winding down once again, Lewis drove and kicked the ball to Hempfling for a corner three with 48 seconds to go. That Hempfling triple capped the scoring.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS

• BGSU had 20 assists on 25 baskets.
• The Falcons scored just 10 points in the fourth quarter, but allowed the Bobcats to score just 12. The BG defense surrendered just three field goals in both the third and fourth periods, as Ohio went 6-for-25 from the floor – including 1-of-13 from the arc – in the second half.
• Brett and Hampton combined for all of bg's points during an 11-0 second-quarter run, and that duo had the falcons' final 15 points of the quarter.
• BGSU had a 38-35 rebounding advantage, and the Falcons had the lead in points off turnovers (25-11), points in the paint (28-20) and second-chance points (7-6).
• Saturday's game marked just the second time in 18 games this season that all 15 players on the BGSU roster were in uniform. Every member of the team suited up for the Falcons' game at Ball State on Jan. 2, and all 15 got into that game, an 89-55 win in Muncie.
