AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team bounced back in a big way following its series-opening loss yesterday, as the Falcons won both games of Saturday's (March 27) doubleheader at the University of Akron. BGSU won the first game of the day, 6-0, before earning an extra-innings win by a score of 7-1 in the night cap.
Â
With the pair of wins, Bowling Green moves to 5-2 in Mid-American Conference play, marking the program's best league start after seven games since 2008.
Â
Right-handed pitcher Andrew Abrahamowicz set the tone by recording a complete-game win for the second-straight outing. Abrahamowicz blanked the Zips over seven innings, allowing just four hits. The native of Lorain, Ohio struck out four batters and did not issue a single walk. Abrahamowicz has worked at least six innings on the bump in four-straight starts.
Â
The Falcons scored in three different innings in the first game. Ryan Johnston singled home a run in BGSU's three-run second. Dylan Dohanos drove home a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, and then doubled home another in the sixth. One of Nathan Rose's two hits in the contest was a solo home run in the sixth.
Â
Another dominant pitching effort kept the Falcons alive for the doubleheader sweep, as southpaw Rigo Ramos allowed just one unearned run over six innings in the night cap. Ramos allowed just three hits and two walks, striking out a season-high six batters.
Â
Kyle Gurney's RBI single in the first put the Falcons on top, but the Zips came back with an unearned run in the third, setting up some late-innings drama. With UA just 90 feet away from a walk-off win, Nathan Lohmeier induced a 1-2-3 double play to send the ballgame into extras.
Â
BGSU went on to score six runs in the top of the eighth to secure the victory. Adam Furnas drew one of his three walks in the game to start the rally. After he came around to score on a close play at the plate to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage, Jared Johnson plated two more runs with a single to right field. Rose and Dohanos followed up a wild pitch with consecutive RBI singles to conclude the game's scoring.
Â
Lohmeier picked up his second win of the season by slamming the door shut in the bottom of the eighth. BGSU goes the series win in the finale tomorrow (Match 28) at 12 p.m.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Outstanding job by our players today bouncing back after Friday's game. We showed our character when adversity hit all day long. I'm extremely proud of their ability to band together to get this doubleheader. Offensively, Nate Rose was really good at the plate. His home run was a big lift and he strung together great at-bats in both games. He's been staying ready all year and it was awesome to see the game pay him back for how hard he works. Adam Furnas continued his good weekend with the bat and is a threat that we need in the middle of our order.
"The mound was where we stood out. Abrahamowicz and Ramos picked up where they left off last week. Andrew was as efficient as you could possibly be throwing 79 pitches in seven innings and keeps getting better every start. He's a dude for us. Ramos was exceptional, as well. He keeps a low heart beat and never seems bothered. He got into some jams, but because he controls the running game and handles pressure well, he made pitches to keep them off the scoreboard. Nate Lohmeier's ability to speak results into existence in the seventh inning during a bases-loaded, one-out jam is why we trust him late in games. He had to find a different way to get the job done and his PFP on the double play to end the seventh gave us a huge lift, which led to the six-spot in our next half."
