Alumnae Day Set for Saturday; Senior Day on Sunday
UP NEXT IN FALCON SOFTBALL
• BGSU vs. Akron • April 23-24 • Bowling Green, Ohio •
• The BGSU softball team returns home for a key Mid-American Conference series this weekend. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons face the team just ahead of them in the league standings, as Akron comes to Meserve Field.
• The Falcons and Zips will play three games at Meserve, including a Saturday (April 23) doubleheader and a Sunday (April 24) single game. Saturday's twinbill will be Alumnae Day a Meserve, with the first pitch of game one set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday's game begins at 12:00 p.m., and it will be Senior Day, with four members of the BGSU program recognized prior to the contest. That quartet includes Sammy Dees, Sarah Gonzalez, Payton Hamm and Kiara Hurley.
• All three games vs. the Zips are scheduled to be aired by BCSN in the Toledo area, as well as on the BCSN app and on ESPN3.com.
• NOTE: It will be a busy weekend at BGSU, with a veritable plethora of sporting events on tap. Need-to-know parking and traffic information can be found here, and a map is available here.
• The Falcons were originally scheduled to wrap up non-conference play with a Tuesday (April 26) twinbill vs. Cleveland State, but that doubleheader has been canceled.
• The Falcons are 23-13 overall and 9-7 in MAC play, and BGSU currently sits in sixth place in the 11-team league. Akron is in fifth place, and the third- through sixth-place teams are separated by just a game and a half.
• BGSU won one of three games at MAC-leading Miami earlier this week. On Tuesday, the Falcons were down to their final out before rallying for the win. BG had just one hit through the first six-and-two-thirds innings, but Sarah Gonzalez, Maycee Godbolt and Greta L'Esperance all singled to load the bases, before Peyton Dolejs hit a grand slam. Payton Gottshall shut down the RedHawks in the bottom of the inning to close out a 4-2 win.
• Miami took both games on Wednesday, by scores of 9-0 and 1-0. In the latter contest, Gottshall suffered the loss despite allowing just two hits.
• L'Esperance is batting a BGSU-best .379 on the season, and also leads the Falcons in stolen bases (25) and runs scored (32). She is already tied for fifth on the BGSU single-season steals list.
• Reagan Williamson is hitting .330 on the year, while Dolejs and Sophie Weber are batting .319 and .283, respectively.
• Williamson tops the team in homers (seven), runs batted in (28), total bases (62) and slugging percentage (.585). Dolejs, one of three Falcons (along with L'Esperance and Williamson) to start all 36 games, is tied for the team lead in walks (19) and is second in runs (25), extra-base hits (11), RBI (26) and slugging pct. (.487).
• Gonzalez, in her fifth year as a full-time starter, has played in 209 of BG's 210 games since her arrival on campus. She has made 208 starts, which places her fifth on that school career list.
• Gonzalez is also ranked among the top all-time Falcons in career games played (209, T-seventh), homers (15, 12th), walks (63, T-seventh), sacrifice flies (eight, T-third) and sac bunts (23, 13th).
• L'Esperance has 54 steals in her BGSU career, and is ranked fourth in school history. She has a career batting average of .360, good for third on that BGSU chart.
• In the circle, Gottshall has a record of 17-8, a 1.36 ERA and 259 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings. Gottshall has been named MAC Pitcher of the Week five times this season to date.
• Gottshall has seen action in 14 of BGSU's last 17 games and 19 of the last 23 contests. She has an ERA of just 1.13 in MAC games this season.
• Hurley is 3-2 with four saves and a 3.65 ERA this spring, while Sydney Stepp is 1-2 with a 4.70 ERA. Hurley's save total is the highest by a BGSU player in eight years. Hannah Davies has a 2-1 record and an ERA of 5.25.
• Gottshall currently leads the MAC in eight statistical categories, and is ranked among the top-25 pitchers in the nation all eight of those categories. She is second in the country in total strikeouts, 10th in both innings pitched and strikeout-to-walk ratio, 12th in strikeouts per seven innings, 15th in wins and shutouts, 19th in hits allowed per seven innings and 22nd in ERA. Her total of 259 strikeouts already places her second on that BG single-season list.
• Offensively, L'Esperance leads the MAC in stolen bases and steals per game, while ranking third in the league in hits. She is 20th in the nation in total steals and 12th in steals per contest.
• As a team, the Falcons lead the league in ERA (2.52) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.33), while ranking second in winning pct. (.639).
• Gottshall struck out a school-record 282 batters last season, and obliterated the BGSU record for strikeouts per seven innings, averaging 9.79 (the old record was 8.46). Gottshall went 20-12 last spring, becoming just the fourth pitcher in school history, and the first since 1995, to win 20 games in a season.
• This season, Gottshall is averaging 11.38 strikeouts per seven innings, which would shatter the record she set last spring.
• Gottshall is now ranked second in school history with 669 career strikeouts, in just 448 innings pitched. She trails only BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel (768 strikeouts) on that list.
• In just her third year with the Falcons (including a shortened 2020 season), Gottshall already has added her name to numerous BGSU career lists, including strikeouts per seven innings (10.45, first), strikeouts (second), winning pct. (.658 [48-25], fourth), ERA (1.70, sixth), wins (48, sixth), complete games (51, sixth), shutouts (18, seventh), innings pitched (ninth), games started (62, 13th) and saves (three, T-14th). In her first season at BGSU, Hurley is already tied for 11th on the BG career saves list.
• Akron is 16-24 overall, and the Zips are 11-8 in the MAC, good for fifth place entering the weekend. Molly McChesney is hitting .340 to pace the UA offense, while Lexie Petrof is 5-8 in the circle and leads the pitching staff with 18 games started and 82 2/3 innings.
• BGSU leads Akron, 61-29-1, in the all-time series, and the Falcons captured four close games at Meserve Field last season (April 2-4, 2021). Three of those wins were one-run differentials.
• The Falcons end the month of April with a three-game series at Ball State (April 29-30), and BGSU wraps up the home portion of the schedule with a midweek series vs. Central Michigan (May 3-4). The regular season concludes with a three-game set at Kent State (May 7-8), and the top-four teams in the league will head to the MAC Tournament (May 12-14), which will be hosted by the regular-season champion.
