April 03, 2022 | Baseball
Kyle Gurney, Nathan Archer and Justin Fugitt paced the Falcons in the victory, each logging a home run in the effort. Gurney and Archer tied for the team-lead in RBI with three apiece. Gurney's home run marked his fourth over two days while Archer's was his first at Steller Field. Archer also added two stolen bases to his stat line, giving him five over the last two games.
On the mound, Nic Good made his first collegiate appearance, being in relief, and picked up the win. Levi Gazarek and Isaiah Seidel also made appearances out of the pen. The three relievers combined for 5.1 innings of work, giving up just one run on four hits.
The Falcons will now look to carry their momentum into a midweek non-conference game with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday (April 5). The Orange and Brown are set to make the trip to Rochester, Mich. for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a one-two-three inning in the top of the first by Owen Recker, the Falcons scored the first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Adam Fallon singled before stealing second, setting up an RBI double by Kyle Gurney to make it a quick 1-0 lead for BGSU.
- Akron quickly responded in the second. Four singles for the Zips resulted in a pair of runs to push Akron ahead 2-1.
- A big bottom of the second reclaimed the lead for Bowling Green. Justin Fugitt began the inning with a towering home run to right field to tie it up at 2-2.
- Later in the second, a double steal by Nathan Archer and Ryan Johnston set up a two-RBI single up the middle for Fallon. In the next at-bat, Gurney launched a two-run home run to left field, his first of the game and fourth of the series, giving BGSU a 6-2 lead.
- Akron saw a home run in the first at-bat of the third inning to cut the lead down to 6-3.
- The Falcons once again answered the run. Nathan Rose started the bottom of the third with a single and moved station to station, going to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. Tyler Ross then doubled to the right center gap to score Rose to increase the score to 7-3.
- Before the end of the inning the Falcons added to their run total. Jack Krause clipped a double into shallow left center to push Ross home to make it 8-3 Bowling Green.
- Akron scored another in the top of the fourth. A single and passed ball put a runner on second for the Zips, scoring on a double. Akron saw a few singles later in the inning to make it 8-7.
- After a pitching change, a run was walked home to tie it up at 8-8.
- The Falcons reclaimed the lead in the bottom half. Tyler Ross singled through the right side for the first run of the inning, being Adam Furnas who walked, before Archer hit a three-run home run to push the lead to 12-8.
- Johnston then logged a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, setting up a sacrifice fly to left Jack Krause to extend the lead to 13-8.
- After three scoreless frames, the Zips added a tally in the top of the eighth. A leadoff double and single allowed a run to score on a double play ball to cut the deficit to 13-9, which would go down as the last run of the game.

QUOTE FROM COACH HALLOCK
"We played complementary baseball for most of the weekend. We had some guys take steps forward on the mound, which is encouraging to see. Our defense was solid. Offensively we stood out this whole week. We ran the bases and drove the ball to all fields. Our energy carried us and it was exciting to watch us perform in front of our home crowd with presence. Now we have to take it on the road, starting Tuesday."
