Falcons To Face Golden Grizzlies In Midst Of Three-Game Win Streak
April 04, 2022 | Baseball
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball program will once again hit the road for a Tuesday (April 5) clash, this time with the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University. This game will be held at Oakland Baseball Stadium in Rochester, Michigan. The Falcons will look to maintain their good form in this game, riding a three-game winning streak, and carry that momentum into their next weekend series at Kent State.
The Falcons are coming off a weekend of showcasing their offensive firepower, as they took the last three games of a four-game series against Akron. This is the first time this season the Falcons have been on a three-game winning streak, as well as being the first series win for the Falcons since their first series of the season against Saint Louis. The Orange and Brown also topped Michigan State last Tuesday (March 29) to give BGSU wins in four of their last five games.
Current Weekend Schedule
Tuesday, April 5 | 2:30 p.m. | vs. Oakland
Scouting The Golden Grizzlies
Oakland got off to a slow start this season but have rebounded nicely. They enter the game on Tuesday holding a 13-13 record, including a 6-3 standing in the Horizon League. Their last action came against Youngstown State, where they won the series 2-1. Offense seems to be at a high point right now for the Golden Grizzlies, as they have scored 10 or more runs in six of their last seven games. That includes a 14-7 win over Michigan in Ann Arbor last Wednesday (March 30).
Against Oakland All-Time
The Falcons and the Golden Grizzlies first faced off in baseball in 1979, with the Falcons currently leading the all-time series 18-5. That first matchup was a two-game series in Bowling Green where the Orange and Brown won both games. The most recent matchup between these two was in 2019, when the Golden Grizzlies once again came to Bowling Green and lost. BGSU and Oakland were set to play earlier this season at Steller Field on March 22, but weather caused schedule changes that resulted in the game's cancelation.
Current Streaks
The Falcons won their last weekend series against Akron 3-1. The first game went the way of the Zips after a ninth-inning rally made it 6-4. The Falcons took over the series after that, winning the next three games 15-4, 9-3, and 13-9, respectively. The first of the wins saw the Falcons blast nine extra-base hits, including four homers. Nathan Rose had a three-hit game, including one of those homers. Good pitching from Andrew Abrahamowicz and Joel Roediger sealed the result.
In the second win, the Falcons had more highlight plays. Nathan Archer produced one of them, poking a single through the middle and following it up by stealing second, third and home. Kyle Gurney put the game out of reach in the eighth inning with a three-run home run, his second homer of the game. Pitching was also outstanding, as Connar Penrod and Peyton Wilson combined to throw all nine innings, only allowing two earned runs and striking out nine. For their efforts, Penrod was the winning pitcher and Wilson was awarded the save.
The third win was more of the same, as the Falcons produced seven more extra-base hits, including three homers. Stealing seven bases also was paramount to the Falcons' success. Stellar bullpen performances from Nic Good, Levi Gazarek and Isaiah Seidel made the Falcons' win a certainty.
