Falcons, OU Set For 7 p.m. Start Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will go back on the road this weekend, taking on the Ohio Bobcats in Athens, Ohio for a pair of Mid-American Conference matches. The Falcons and Bobcats are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Friday (Oct. 13) and a 4 p.m. first serve on Saturday (Oct. 14). Battling The Bobcats In Athens
The Ohio Bobcats will enter the weekend against the Falcons with a 4-3 conference standing while being 9-10 on the season. Ohio is coming off a weekend split, topping Northern Illinois 3-1 on Thursday (Oct. 5) before falling to Western Michigan 3-2 on Friday (Oct. 6). Ohio also split series this season with Akron and Buffalo while picking up a midweek win over Kent State for their 4-3 MAC record. As for the non-conference portion of the season, Ohio faced one ranked opponent, losing to No. 23 Iowa State in three sets. They also tallied a four-match win streak in non-conference play.
Scouting Ohio
On the offensive end, Ohio is led this year by the duo of senior Caitlin O'Farrell and sophomore Anna Kharchynska. The Bobcat pairing has combined for 484 kills this year to go along with 25 aces. O'Farrell leads the way with 265 kills and 11 aces followed by Kharchynska with 219 kills and 14 aces. Staying in aces, Sam Steele paces Ohio with a team-leading 29 while also leading the team in digs with 327. As for at the net, Kharchynska leads the team in blocks with 60 followed closely by O'Farrell with 58 and senior Elizabeth Hoerlein with 57.
All-Time Against The Bobcats
Entering this weekend, the Falcons and Bobcats have faced 91 times previously. Bowling Green holds the all-time advantage with a record of 52-39 against Ohio while also being 30-22 when playing in Athens. The Orange and Brown have won three straight against Ohio, as well as nine of the last 10, but the last meeting in Athens went to the Bobcats in a 3-2 final on Nov. 13, 2021.
One Away From 200
Head coach Danijela Tomic is closing in on a milestone win with the Falcons. Now in her 12th season with the Orange and Brown, Tomic enters the weekend with 199 wins at the helm of BGSU Volleyball, standing just one win away from 200. Of those 200, 129 have come in conference play. During her 19 seasons as a head coach at the Division I level, Tomic has recorded 358 victories.
Triple-Double Pairing
Against Toledo, Lauryn Hovey registered her first triple-double of the season and the fourth of her collegiate career. Hovey joins Amanda Otten as the two Falcons with triple-doubles this year after Otten recorded two during the same weekend in September. BGSU is now one of just two teams in the nation with multiple players having logged a triple-double this season, joining UT Martin. Bowling Green is the only team of the two to have one of the players with multiple triple-doubles.
Behind The Service Line
Last weekend, the Falcons landed 17 aces as a team, bringing their season total to 119. The mark currently has the Falcons tied for 46th in the nation for the most aces by a team this year and fourth in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons are also fourth in the MAC for aces per set during conference play with an average of 1.75, an increase from the team's 1.67 mark during the non-conference portion of the season.
Blocking Out The Competition
On the season, Bowling Green is currently third in the conference in blocks, averaging 2.07 per set over the course of the season thus far. BGSU is also one of two teams in the conference with multiple players in the top 10 for blocks per set. For the Falcons, Jessica Andrews is fifth in the MAC, averaging 0.92 blocks per set with Alexis Mettille in sixth with a mark of 0.98.
Strength Of Schedule
So far this season, the Falcons are tied with Miami (OH) for the toughest conference schedule to date, having faced the same four teams. The MAC opponents BGSU has faced this year are a combined 21-3 within conference play with a .875 winning percentage. Kent State is next on the list behind Bowling Green and Miami (OH) with a mark of .774 (24-7). Eastern Michigan has the toughest in the MAC West at .742 (23-8).
