BGVB Returns Home To Stroh Center For Weekend Slate With Kent State

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will return home to the Stroh Center this weekend for a pair of matches against the Kent State Golden Flashes, splitting up a total of seven road contests for the Orange and Brown. The weekend homestand comes after playing three matches on the road and will be followed by another four for the Falcons. Both contests against the Golden Flashes will be 6 p.m. starts inside the Stroh Center.
At The Matches
Friday's game (Oct. 20) against the Golden Flashes will be Dig Pink at the Stroh Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match and participate in the Moment of Noise following the first set. As for the match on Saturday (Oct. 21), it will be Family Weekend on the campus of Bowling Green State University.
Facing The Golden Flashes
The Kent State Golden Flashes were one of the four teams to not play a midweek match on Tuesday (Oct. 17) and will enter after splitting last weekend with the Miami (OH) RedHawks, with Kent State's win being a 3-0 victory. The split with the RedHawks granted both Miami and Kent State their first conference wins of the season and broke an eight-match losing streak for the Golden Flashes. Of Kent State's other four wins, three came in five sets, topping South Dakota State, Canisius and Cleveland State in the non-conference season. They also topped Purdue Fort Wayne in four sets.
Scouting Kent State
The Golden Flashes are led on the attack by sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire with 257 kills. McGuire not only leads Kent State, but the MAC, in kills per set with a mark of 4.15 on the season and 4.30 in MAC play. On the defensive side, senior libero Bryn Roberts leads the way with 306 digs, averaging 4.31 per set which is fourth in the MAC for the season. Kent State also has the blocking duo of Burgundy Walters and Kiana Mack with 57 and 50 blocks, respectively.
All-Time Against The Golden Flashes
Entering this weekend, the Falcons and Golden Flashes have faced 89 times with Bowling Green holding the all-time advantage with a record of 65-24. Additionally, BGSU is 34-9 when hosting Kent State. In the all-time series, Bowling Green has won the last six meetings as well as 14 of the last 15. As for matches in Bowling Green, BGSU has won 10 of the last 11.
Eyes On The Ace
As a team, the Falcons have landed 138 aces so far this season, ranking fourth in the conference and tied for 28th in the nation. Individually, Lauryn Hovey leads the way with 31, which is seventh in the MAC. Against Kent State, aces could be a focal point as the Golden Flashes have allowed the most aces in the MAC this season with 160, averaging 2.13 per set.
Falcons On The Attack
Against Miami (OH), the Falcons registered a .423 hitting percentage, the team's best mark of the season, with only eight attack errors over the three sets, a season-best. Each player that attempted at least two attacks finished the match with a hitting percentage north of .300 for the Falcons. Alexis Mettille (.667), Mia Tyler (.429), Lauryn Hovey (.391) and Kat Mandly, (.312) all landed at least six kills in the process.
Walz Approaching Trio Of Milestones
Senior setter Jaden Walz is quickly approaching a trio of milestones in the Orange and Brown. Now in her fourth season with the Falcons, Walz is nearing two career marks as well as one for the season. This year, Walz has tallied 490 assists for the Falcons, sitting just 10 away from 500 for the year. Additionally, her career total is up to 1,448 assists as she closes in on 1,500 career assists after surpassing 1,000 earlier this season. The list rounds out with 433 career digs, approaching 500.
