Falcons Return To The Road With Matches At EMU, CMU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will be back on the road for a pair of conference matches, first taking on Eastern Michigan followed by Central Michigan. The match against Eastern Michigan is set for Thursday (Oct. 26) while Central Michigan is set for Friday (Oct. 27), both for 6 p.m. starts.
The Falcons will enter the week riding a four-match win streak after topping Ohio and Miami (OH) on the road before besting Kent State in a pair of matches at home. The matches against EMU and CMU will start a four-match road trip for the Falcons, taking on Akron next weekend before returning home to the Stroh Center for the final three matches of the regular season.
Educating On Eastern
Eastern Michigan will enter the weekend winless in the Mid-American Conference with an 0-11 standing and 2-21 overall record. EMU has lost 15 straight matches going back to their non-conference slate. The two wins for the Eagles came in neutral site matches during their non-conference season. The first was a five-set win against Western Illinois. The second came less than a week later, topping Chicago State in straight sets. EMU has lost their last eight matches in 3-0 finals after going five sets with Central Michigan on Sept. 26.
Eastern Michigan is led by senior Callie Minshew, pacing the team in kills (310) and aces (21) while being second in digs (234) and blocks (41). Freshman Hannah Howard leads in the way in digs with 301 while sophomore Abigail Stanford tops the stat sheet for blocks with 47.
In the all-time series the Falcons hold a record of 40-29 over Eastern Michigan as well as leading the series in Ypsilanti 21-17. The Falcons have won six of the last seven meetings against the Eagles while winning three of the last four at EMU.
Centering On Central
Central Michigan is coming off a pair of conference victories, topping Northern Illinois at home 3-0 on Friday (Oct. 20) and 3-1 on Saturday (Oct. 21). On the year, CMU is 10-13 while being 4-7 in MAC play. They've gone 6-1 at home with their lone home loss coming against Toledo in a 3-1 final. While Central Michigan will be the second opponent of the weekend for Bowling Green, BGSU will be the first for CMU before they host Miami (OH) on Saturday (Oct. 28) to complete the split weekend series.
A team attack has led CMU this season with seven players logging at least 100 kills so far, but no one having over 165 entering the weekend. Sophomore Claire Ammeraal paces Central with 796 assists while being second in digs with 241 and third in blocks with 40.
The all-time series between BGSU and CMU leans the way of the Falcons with Bowling Green leading 37-26 while being 19-14 in Mount Pleasant. The Falcons have won seven straight against CMU and 10 of the last 11.
Historic Stretch On The Attack
As a team, the Falcons have hit at least .400 in three straight matches, logging a mark of .423 against Miami (OH) in addition to .470 and .417 in the matches against Kent State. With team match-by-match stats archived from 1998 on, this is the first time in that span that BGSU has hit .400 or higher in three consecutive matches. Over the three matches, the Falcons have landed 128 kills on 245 attacks with just 21 errors for a cumulative hitting percentage of .437 during the stretch.
Success Behind The Service Line
In the second match against Kent State, the Falcons landed a season-high 12 aces. Over the course of the season, BGSU has logged 158 aces as a team, ranking 19th in the nation and third in the Mid-American Conference behind only Akron and Buffalo. In conference play, BGSU is averaging a MAC-leading 1.98 aces per set with three players inside the top 10. Lauryn Hovey's 23 aces leads the MAC during conference play while Kat Mandly and Lindsey LaPinta are tied for eighth with 13.
Tyler Tearing It Up
In addition to the team's historic stretch, Mia Tyler is on an impressive run of her own. Tyler has posted a hitting percentage of at least .333 in each of the last five matches while logging double-digit kills in each match as well. Tyler has hit above .500 in the last two matches while registering a mark of .427 over the stretch. Tyler has landed 57 kills on 110 attacks with just 10 errors over the five matches.
Walz Entering The MAC's Top 10
Over the last five matches, Jaden Walz has tallied 186 assists, averaging 10.94 assists per set during the span. The total has brought Walz's season total to 563 assists, averaging 6.70 per set. The mark has moved Walz into the Top 10 in the conference for assists per set over the course of the season. As for conference play, Walz has 333 assists with an 8.76 per set average that is seventh in the MAC.
