October 31, 2023 | Women's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University women's basketball fans get their first chance to see the 2023-24 team in action on Thursday evening (Nov. 2), as head coach Fred Chmiel's Falcons host Purdue University Northwest in the team's lone exhibition game. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center, and tickets are just $10 for reserved chairback seats and $8 for general admission.
Chmiel and his staff – which is comprised of assistant coaches Maggie Lucas, Nick DiPillo and Lexxus Graham-Blincoe, video coordinator Audra Clark, director of operations Tim Kjar and director of player personnel Zhaque Gray – welcome back a total of nine student-athletes from last year's team.
The Falcons went 31-7 overall in the 2022-23 season, with the last four victories coming in the WNIT. BGSU advanced to the semifinals of that tourney for the first time in school history. The '22-23 Falcon squad went 14-4 in Mid-American Conference play.
The list of returnees includes Lexi Fleming and Morgan Sharps, who combined to make 92 three-point field goals. Sharps averaged 10.4 points per game and shot nearly 40 percent from the arc (41-of-104) in 17 games, before suffering a season-ending injury.
Fleming played in 36 of the Falcons' 38 games, and had 9.0 ppg, 2.6 assists per game and a total of 51 long-range makes. She started 20 contests on the year.
Amy Velasco (6.4 ppg, 3.0 apg) and Sophie Dziekan (4.6 ppg) each played in all 38 games a year ago. Velasco had an assist/turnover ratio of 2.17, while Dziekan shot a team-best 56.2 percent from the floor.
Jasmine Clerkley, Jasmine Fearne, Olivia Hill, Emily Siesel and Jaci Tubergen round out the returnees. The team's five newcomers include Baylor transfer Erika Porter as well as freshmen Taya Ellis, Paige Kohler, Keiryn McGuff and Abbie Riddle.
Purdue Northwest, a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, went 8-21 overall and 4-14 in conference play last season. Senior Dash Shaw returns after averaging 18.5 points per game last season and earning All-GLIAC First-Team honors for coach Courtney Locke.
Following Thursday's exhibition, the Falcons will next be in action on Tuesday (Nov. 7), facing Cleveland State in the 2023-24 regular-season opener. That game is set for a 6:00 p.m. tip at the Stroh.
