A RARE APPEARANCE AT THE STROH
• Monday's Duquesne game marks BGSU's first home contest in nearly three weeks. And, following the DU matchup, the Falcons will not play at home again for another three weeks.
• BGSU opened the season with a win over Cleveland State on Nov. 7. That was one of just three games at the Stroh Center in a two-month span, as the Orange and Brown will play eight of the season's first 11 games away from home.
• The Falcons' game vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 6 begins a four-game span in which BG will play three home contests. Then, after a pair of road games, the Falcons will play five of the next six contests inside the Stroh.
MO'S BACK!
• The Lehigh game, as mentioned, marked the return of Morgan Sharps to the court. Sharps, a transfer from Xavier, played in each of BGSU's first 50 games after coming to BG, but was injured in the Falcons' win over Toledo in January of 2023.
• Sharps, who started the first 17 games last season, made her presence felt immediately in the win over the Mountain Hawks. In less than 20 minutes of action, she had 15 points, three rebounds and three steals. Sharps knocked down four three-point field-goal attempts, and now has made 117 long-range shots at BG.
BIG LEX A B!G PART OF BG'S B!G SUCCESS
• Lexi Fleming has been a B!G part of the Falcons' success since arriving at BGSU. The MAC Freshman of the Year in 2020-21, Fleming missed the entire '21-22 season due to injury, but returned to the court last season and saw action in 36 games.
• Entering the Duquesne game, Fleming has played in 68 games as a Falcon. BGSU has a record of 53-15 in those 68 games, including a 27-8 ledger in MAC regular-season play, a 31-10 mark in all games (regular season and tournament) against conference foes and a 24-5 record at the Stroh Center.
FLEMING ON FIRE DURING BG'S WIN STREAK
• Lexi Fleming has helped the Falcons in multiple ways this season, as she leads BG in both scoring and steals, while ranking second in rebounding and third in assists. Fleming has kicked it up a notch during BG's current three-game winning streak.
• In those three games – wins vs. Xavier, Mercer and Lehigh – Fleming has averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 4.7 steals. She had 21 points against Xavier, including 13 in the third quarter alone, and scored 22 points vs. Lehigh. And, the 5-5 guard had a team-leading seven rebounds in each of those wins.
HILL CAN SCORE INSIDE AND OUT
• Senior Olivia Hill entered the Xavier game with a career scoring high of seven points. She matched that total in the first quarter alone, with seven points in the opening 10 minutes vs. the Musketeers. Hill finished the contest with 12 points in the victory.
• In her first 59 career games, Hill had gone 0-for-1 from three-point range. But, she made the first long-distance shot of her career in the first quarter at XU, then hit another three-point try in the third period. She went 2-for-3 from the arc in the win, and knocked down a corner three in BG's next game, against Mercer.
THE FALCONS – A QUICK OVERVIEW
• The Falcons head into the Duquesne game with a 4-1 record on the young season. BGSU rallied to beat Cleveland State, 89-86, in the season opener at the Stroh Center (Nov. 7), before falling at Texas State by a 74-48 score (Nov. 11). The Falcons have bounced back by winning the last three games. BG picked up the first road win of the season, with a 73-64 victory at Xavier on Nov. 18, before going to Savannah, Ga., and posting a pair of neutral-site victories in the Savannah Hoops Invitational.
• The Falcons topped Mercer by a 59-38 final on Wednesday (Nov. 22), and BGSU returned to the court on Thanksgiving Day and defeated Lehigh, 85-73.
• Four Falcons scored at least 16 points against CSU, led by a pair of newcomers. Paige Kohler and Erika Porter had 20 points each, and that duo combined for 33 points in the second half. Lexi Fleming scored 19 points, while Amy Velasco added 16 points and a game-high eight assists vs. the Vikings.
• Velasco was the lone Falcon in double figures at Texas State, scoring 14 points. Freshman Taya Ellis, in just her second collegiate game, had game-high totals of 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.
• Fleming had 21 points – including 13 in the third quarter alone – in the win at XU. She also had team-high totals of seven rebounds and five steals, to go along with five assists. Kohler had 15 points and six assists, with Velasco adding 15 points and Olivia Hill 12.
• Fleming and Velasco each hit double figures in the win over Mercer, with freshmen Kohler and Ellis each pulling down nine rebounds. The Lehigh game saw Fleming score a game-high 22 points, with Porter (20), Morgan Sharps (15) and Velasco (14) all in double digits as well. Sharps was seeing her first game action in over 10 months.
• A total of 13 Falcons have seen action so far this season, with nine of those 13 averaging over 11 minutes played per contest. Velasco leads the Falcons with 36.0 minutes per game, followed by Fleming (33.5 mpg) and Kohler (31.4).
• Fleming leads the Falcons in scoring, with 16.4 points per game, with Velasco and Kohler at 14.0 and 11.0 ppg, respectively. Porter has 10.4 points per outing to date.
• Ellis leads the Falcons in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and blocks (1.3 bpg). Kohler paces BG with 4.8 assists per game, while Fleming has a team-high 3.4 steals per contest.
• Last year, the Falcons went 31-7 overall, and BGSU was 14-4 in MAC play. The Falcons tied Ball State for second in the conference, and BG earned the number-two seed for the MAC Tournament and advanced to the championship game.
• Then, the Orange and Brown won four games in the WNIT to advance all the way to the semifinal round of that tourney.
• A total of nine student-athletes return from that team in 2023-24. Sharps averaged 10.4 ppg, making 41 triples in 17 games while shooting 39.8% from the arc, but she missed the final 21 games due to an injury suffered early in the Falcons' double-digit win over Toledo on Jan. 18.
• Fleming averaged 9.0 ppg on the year, and was second on the team with 51 successful long-distance shots. She started 20 of the 21 games after Sharps was injured, and was fourth on the club in assists (2.61 apg) and third in steals (1.86 spg).
• Velasco and Sophie Dziekan had 6.4 and 4.6 ppg, respectively. Dzieken shot 56.2% on the year, going 77-for-137 on the season. Velasco led the Falcons during the WNIT run, with a career-high 11 assists at Green Bay, a season-high 18 points against Florida and a 19-point game against Columbia. Velasco was second on the club with 2.97 apg and had an assist/turnover ratio of 2.17, good for second on the team behind Sharps (2.55).
• The Falcons lost four starters from a year ago, as Allison Day completed her eligibility and Elissa Brett, Nyla Hampton and Jocelyn Tate all entered the transfer portal. Additionally, Kadie Hempfling, the only player in school history with over 1,200 points, 800 rebounds and 400 assists, completed her eligibility.
• Fleming, as mentioned, made 20 starts a year ago, with Sharps starting 17 contests and Velasco five.
• The group of returnees also includes Jasmine Clerkley, Jasmine Fearne, Olivia Hill, Emily Siesel and Jaci Tubergen.
• Five newcomers have joined head coach Fred Chmiel's 2023-24 club. That quintet includes Baylor transfer Porter as well as freshmen Ellis, Kohler, Keiryn McGuff and Abbie Riddle.
• Chmiel's staff is comprised of assistant coaches Maggie Lucas, Nick DiPillo and Lexxus Graham-Blincoe, video coordinator Audra Clark, director of operations Tim Kjar and director of player personnel Zhaque Gray.
• BGSU picked up an 82-43 win over Purdue Northwest in the team's lone exhibition game (Nov. 2). All nine of the players who saw action scored at least two points, with eight scoring five points or more.
THREE-MENDOUS
• A pair of Falcons have moved into the top 20 on the BGSU career list for three-point field goals made. Lexi Fleming now has 121 career triples, tying her for 17th on the school list. Morgan Sharps has hit 117 long-distance shots in her Falcon career, deadlocking her for 20th on the BG chart.
• More impressively, both players currently rank among the top-five Falcons in school history in three-pointers made per game. Sharps is second with 2.294 triples per game, trailing only the legendary Lauren Prochaska (2.296 three-pointers per game from 2007-11). Fleming currently ranks fifth on that list, having made 1.779 treys per contest.
TOUGH CROWD!
• The Falcons have put together arguably the toughest non-conference schedule in program history in 2023-24. Head coach Fred Chmiel's club will face a trio of top-10 teams in Iowa, South Carolina and Indiana, along with a Cleveland State squad that won 30 games last season.
• South Carolina (first), Indiana (second) and Iowa (third) finished 1-2-3 in the nation in the final Associated Press poll of the 2022-23 season, which was announced just before the NCAA Tournament began.
• Iowa, led by consensus national player of the year Caitlin Clark, won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced all the way to the national championship game.
• South Carolina has reached the Final Four in each of the last three seasons, going 36-1 and advancing to the national semifinals in 2023 after winning the title in '22.
• Indiana went 28-4 and won the Big Ten regular-season crown last season.
• In the USA Today Sports preseason top-25 poll, Iowa checked in at No. 3 in the nation, with South Carolina fourth and Indiana ninth. The first Associated Press poll of '23-24 saw Iowa ranked third, South Carolina sixth and Indiana ninth.
• In the most recent listings (dated Nov. 20-21), South Carolina is ranked first in both polls, with Iowa fifth in the AP poll and sixth in the USA Today rankings. Indiana is 19th in the USA Today top 25 and 21st on the AP chart in the latest poll.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE DUKES
• Duquesne will bring a 3-1 overall record to the Stroh Center, and the Dukes – like the Falcons – have won three games in a row. DU lost to Princeton in the season opener, before rebounding to defeat Niagara, Howard and Pittsburgh. Three of the four games have come on the road, with the win over Pitt (56-55 on Nov. 18) the lone exception.
• Individually, Megan McConnell leads the team in scoring and rebounding, with 12.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. McConnell, who was named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List, also paces the club in both assists and steals. Amaya Hamilton has 11.3 ppg, with Naelle Bernard averaging 10.5 points per outing.
• Head coach Dan Burt welcomed back nine players, including all five starters, from last year's club that went 19-12 overall and 8-8 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Dukes were picked to finish fifth in the A-10 this season.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Duquesne, 4-1, in the all-time series, and BGSU has won the last two meetings. The teams' last matchup came in the second round of the 2013 WNIT, with the Falcons picking up a 61-54 victory at the Stroh Center (March 23, 2013).
• Prior to that game, the teams had not met since December of 2005. The Falcons are 3-0 at home (1-0 at the Stroh) and 1-1 on the road vs. the Dukes over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Duquesne game, the Falcons will begin an arduous December schedule with a trip to Iowa City. BGSU will meet Iowa – currently ranked fifth in the nation in the AP poll and sixth by USA Today – on Saturday (Dec. 2). That game is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. ET) and will be televised nationally on FS1.
• The rest of the December schedule includes road games vs. Wright State (Dec. 12) and Indiana (Dec. 22), sandwiched around a home contest vs. South Carolina (Dec. 19). The Gamecocks are currently the number-one team in the nation.
