DJ Newman Named MAC Pitcher Of The Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the MAC Player and Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon (May 22). Of those named, DJ Newman earned MAC Pitcher of the Week honors. The award is the first weekly award for Newman as a Falcon and the third this season for BGSU. Nathan Rose earned Player of the Week on April 3 and Adam Fallon earned Player of the Week last week on May 15.
Newman was dominant on the mound in the series opener against Toledo Thursday (May 18), picking up the win in the 4-0 final. In a series where the Falcons and Rockets combined for 51 runs, Newman managed to keep Toledo scoreless through eight innings on the way to BGSU's first shutout of the season. Newman used just 98 pitches through his career-high eight innings of work while striking out a career-high eight. He gave up just two hits in the shutout start and faced just three hitters over the minimum while retiring the last 17 batters he faced.
As a freshman, Newman emerged as a two-way player for the Falcons, leading the team and finishing third in the MAC in batting average. He also paced the team in on-base percentage (.481) and finished second in slugging percentage (.495). As for on the mound, Newman recorded the third-lowest ERA on the team and the second-lowest among pitchers with at least 10 innings pitched this season with a mark of 3.49. As for MAC play, he posted an ERA of 1.80. On the year, he struck out 33 batters over 28.1 innings of work and walked just five batters.
