Kyle Gurney Earns CSC Academic All-America Honors For Second Straight Season
June 07, 2023 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – For the second consecutive season, Bowling Green senior catcher Kyle Gurney has been named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America Team, selected by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA). Gurney was named to the second team this year after earning first team recognition at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign. Gurney is just the second player in program history to be named multiple times with the Falcons, joining John Maroli who was named in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Gurney is the lone representative from the Mid-American Conference and just one of six players named to be listed for a second or third time.
"Kyle Gurney had another banner year in the classroom and on the field for us," said head coach Kyle Hallock. "He has some of the most impressive discipline I've ever seen in a student-athlete. The accolades match the person and player he has become here at BGSU."
Gurney appeared in and started 49 of BGSU's 50 games this season on his way to being named Second Team All-MAC. He paced the Falcons in both hits (56) and runs scored (38) over the course of the season while putting together a team-best 14-game hitting streak from March 17-April 9. Gurney finished the regular season with an on-base percentage of .439, second on the team and 11th in the MAC. This was due partially to leading the team in walks (37) while being tied for eighth in the MAC. Gurney's stat line at the end of the season included being second on the team in OPS (.914), at-bats (179), total bases (85) and doubles (12) while being third on the team in RBI (30) and fourth in slugging percentage (.475). Defensively, Gurney was a mainstay behind the plate for much of the season for the Falcons. He put together a .992 fielding percentage, including 321 putouts. The career-high in putouts raised his career total to 800 by the season's conclusion, placing him ninth all-time in program history for career putouts.
Gurney is a native of Belleville, Mich. He graduated with a degree in Business Analytics and Intelligence and maintained a 3.868 GPA. Last season, Gurney was the first Falcon to be named to an Academic All-America list since 2005. This season, he became the first Falcon to be named in consecutive seasons since 1985.
