Former BGSU Forward Derek Whitmore signs with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL

PORTLAND, MAINE.- Bowling Green State University hockey alumnus Derek Whitmore has been signed to a standard players contract (SPC) with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL for the 2024-25 season, the Mariners announced Monday.
Whitmore, a four-time letterwinner with the Falcons, played in 143 games in his time with the Falcons with 70 goals, 33 assists and 103 points. The Rochester, N.Y., native played with the Orange and Brown from 2004-2008 earning two CCHA Offensive Player of the Week awards during his time and one second team All-CCHA selection.
After his time with the Falcons, Whitmore made his professional debut with the Rochester Americans (AHL) in the 2007-08 season while under contract with the Buffalo Sabres. During the 2011-12 season, Whitmore made his NHL debut skating the with Sabres playing in two games with the organization. In 2017, the forward made his ECHL debut with the Reading Royals, where he spent the season as their captain. In 2021-22, he came out of retirement to play two games for the Iowa Heartlanders. His ECHL career totals include 35 games played with 15 points (9 goals, 6 assists).
Whitmore joins fellow BGSU hockey alumni Josh Nodler and Spencer Kersten, among other BGSU hockey alumni in the ECHL as all three signed ECHL contracts this season.
