• The BGSU softball team closes the 2024 schedule with five Mid-American Conference road games this week. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a Tuesday (April 30) doubleheader against Western Michigan University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Ebert Field.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head to Athens for a three-game weekend series vs. Ohio University. The Falcons and Broncos will play a Saturday (May 4) doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m., along with a 12:00 p.m. single game on Sunday (May 5).
• All five games are scheduled to be streamed, with Tuesday's double-dip available via Bronco All-Access and the three games at Ohio streamed on ESPN+.
• The Broncos and Bobcats enter the week with identical 14-8 MAC records, as the teams are tied for second place in the conference standings.
SENIORS HAVE A DAY
• Saturday (April 27) was Senior Day at Meserve Field, with five seniors recognized for their contributions to the program. That quintet included Lexi Carver, Makailah Dees, Peyton Dolejs, Taylor Turner and Reagan Williamson.
• Once the festivities were concluded, those seniors went out and led the way as the Falcons topped Northern Illinois, 11-3, in five innings.
• Three of the Falcons' five seniors – Dees, Dolejs and Williamson – combined for eight hits and seven RBI in the opener. Dolejs and Williamson each reached base in all four plate appearances. Dolejs went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, hitting a three-run homer.
• Williamson, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time in her BGSU career, went 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBI. She had one of the Falcons' four doubles. Dees went 2-for-4 in the opener, with a run scored and a run driven in. She had multiple-hit games in both ends of that day's twinbill.
• Turner, picked up the victory in the opener, allowing one run and five hits in three innings of work. Carver, battling an injury, made the start at first base before being subbed out of the game after the opening pitch.
THIS COULD GO EITHER WAY (SPOILER ALERT: IT DID)
• In the opener on Saturday, each team loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning. But, while Taylor Turner and BGSU got out of the top half of the inning unscathed, the Falcons made Northern Illinois pay in the bottom of the frame, scoring no fewer than seven times.
• That seven-run inning was BGSU's highest-scoring frame of the season. The Falcons had seven runs in the fourth inning at Notre Dame on March 12.
• BG had not scored more than seven times in an inning since early last season, when the Falcons had a nine-run first frame in a win over Tennessee Tech (March 4, 2023).
ALSO NOTEWORTHY
• Three of BGSU's five seniors – Peyton Dolejs, Makailah Dees and Reagan Williamson – combined to go 8-for-10 at the plate in Saturday's win over NIU. That trio reached base in 10 of 12 plate appearances.
• When cleanup hitter Scarlet Anderson's totals are added to that group, the Falcons' one through four hitters went 10-of-12 with three walks in the win, reaching base in 13 of 15 trips to the plate.
• Both Williamson (a walk and a single) and Dolejs (two singles) reached base twice in the first inning of the opener.
• No fewer than five Falcons had multi-hit games in that contest. Dolejs was 4-for-4, while both Williamson and Anderson went 2-for-2, Marti Henkel 2-for-3 and Dees 2-of-4.
• That game saw the Falcons post season-high totals in runs (11), hits (13), RBI (11), doubles (four) and total bases (20).
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
• Western Michigan has an overall record of 25-20, and the Broncos, as mentioned, are 14-8 in MAC play, good for a tie for second place. WMU, 9-2 at home this year to date, won two of three games vs. Toledo over the weekend. Payton Kelly and Riley Dittmar are batting .351 and .338, respectively. Kelly is tied for the team lead with five homers, while Dittmar has Bronco-best totals of 14 doubles, 21 walks and 27 RBI. In the circle, Rissa Bajusz has started 24 of the team's 44 games and is 15-11 with 18 complete games, seven shutouts and a 1.72 ERA. First-year head coach Marlee Wilson returned nine players from last season's team which went 17-29 overall and 11-15 in the MAC.
• Ohio is 26-22 on the year, and the Bobcats are 14-8 in MAC play heading into a home doubleheader vs. Akron on Tuesday. The 'Cats have won four-straight conference games, including a three-game sweep of Buffalo on the road over the weekend. Shelby Westler and Tori O'Brien are batting .320 and .316, respectively. Four players are batting over .300 while a fifth, Yasmine Logan, is hitting .299 with team-high totals of nine homers and 35 RBI. Skipp Miller is 14-14 with 20 complete games and a 2.73 ERA this spring, while Mikie Lieving is 10-5 with a 2.86 ERA. Head coach Jenna Hall's club went 32-23 overall and 20-9 in the MAC in 2023.
• The Falcons trail Western Michigan, 59-38, in the all-time series, and the Broncos swept a three-game series at Meserve Field last season. BGSU's last trip to Kalamazoo saw the teams split a pair of games two years ago, with the Falcons picking up a 4-2 win in the opener (April 5, 2022). The Falcons are 17-22 at home, 17-34 on the road and 4-3 in neutral-site games vs. the Broncos over the years.
• BGSU trails Ohio, 63-60, in that series. Last spring, the Bobcats captured all three meetings at Meserve Field. Two years ago, the teams split a pair of games in Athens during the regular season, and BGSU picked up a win over the 'Cats in the MAC Tournament in Oxford. In all, the Falcons are 28-25 at home, 22-32 on the road and 10-6 in neutral-site matchups with Ohio.
DOWN THE ROAD
• The Ohio series will conclude the Falcons' 2024 schedule.
