Falcons Finish Second in BGSU Women's Challenge

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's track and field team open the season with a bang, finishing second at the BGSU Women's Challenge, held Saturday afternoon inside the Perry Field House.
The Orange and Brown finished with 145 points in a meet that included four Mid-American Conference schools. Miami captured the meet with 218.5 points. Western Michigan was a close third with 140 points, followed by Ohio (85.5), Oakland (16), IPFW (12).
BGSU got out to an outstanding start capturing 18 points in the women's weight throw. Senior Lauren Bryant led all throwers with a toss of 17.97 meters. Junior Whitney Hartman was third in the event with a throw of 17.37 meters. Junior TaKarra Dunning capped the Falcons' scoring with a seventh place finish with a toss of 14.92 meters.
After a seventh place finish in the weight throw, Dunning took home the top honors in the shot put out distancing the competition with a toss of 14.07 meters. Senior Liz Honegger was not far off the place finishing fourth with a throw of 12.69 meters.
Freshman Brittani McNeal and Senior Amanda Sefcik paced the Falcons in the long jump. The newcomer led all jumpers with a mark of 5.57 meters. Sefcik was right behind her teammate with a distance 5.48 meters, finishing second.
Sabrina Forstein finished second in the pole vault capturing eight points. The sophomore had a mark of 3.35 meters.
Senior Jamie Roflow led a group of Falcons who placed well in the distance events. The senior led all runners in the mile run, with a time of 5:05.31. Freshman Barbara Powers placed third in the 3,000 meters, with a time of 10:26.75 and Junior Kara Butler was fourth in the 5,000 meters, with a time of 18:20.12.
BGSU dominated the mid-distance events capturing first in both the 600 and 800-meter races. Senior Lyndi Springer led all runners in the 600 meters (1:36.75), while sophomore Carly Bates nosed out the competition with a time of 2:21.19 in the 800 meters.
Two underclassmen paved the way for the Falcons in the sprint events. Freshman Rachel Doughty finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.25 and sophomore Shantell Lewis finished third in the 60 meter dash with a mark of 7.96.
On the slate next for the Falcons will be the BGSU Invite inside the Perry Field House, starting at 5:00 p.m. (Friday, Jan. 18).
