With the win, the Wolverines improve to 9-4-3 on the season, while dropping the Falcons to 5-7-2.
The home team took a 1-0 lead just seconds after BGSU had nearly scored at the other end of the pitch, and things snowballed from there.
Freshman Ryan Comiskey scored the Falcons' lone goal, blasting home a pass from classmate Brandon Silva with 9:55 left in the second half.
The Falcons had the first four shot attempts of the match, with the latter two coming just seconds apart.
With just over 13 minutes gone, senior tri-captain Thomas McLean took a free kick from the center circle. McLean played a long ball into the penalty box, where junior and fellow tri-captain Tanner Fink was stationed. Fink, facing away from the goal, headed the ball backward, and U-M goalkeeper Chris Blais made the save. The rebound came to freshman Sam Galloway, who fired another shot on goal, but Blais stopped that shot as well.
Just 24 seconds after Galloway's shot, Soony Saad fired a shot from his own side of midfield, catching Falcon 'keeper Rosales by surprise. The shot, fired from approximately 67 yards away, sailed over the outstretched fingertips of the BG goalie and into the net (see video) with 13:27 gone in the match.
Less than four minutes later, Meram scored on a shot from the top of the box, with Soony Saad assisting. Rosales made a stop on a long shot by Soony Saad midway through the half to keep the score 2-0.
Then, with 18 minutes left before halftime, the Wolverines were called for a foul. A U-M defender, deep in his own end of the field and with Galloway pressuring, played the ball back to Blais, who grabbed the ball. The hosts were whistled for a foul, as the player had not headed the ball to his 'keeper, and BGSU was awarded a free kick inside the penalty area.
Junior Chris Jurtovski slid the ball to senior tri-captain Dusko Topolic, who fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Blais made a kick save, and a follow-up shot by sophomore Joey D'Agostino sailed high.
Michigan put the game away with a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the half. Alex Wood scored on a shot from the top of the box with 5:31 remaining, then Meram split the BG defense and fired a shot into the left side of the goal with just 34 seconds left in the period.
Early in the second period, another McLean free kick nearly found the head of Fink in the box, but the two just missed connections. Almost immediately, Soony Saad struck again.
Saad, one of the nation's leading scorers, took a pass from his brother, Hamoody Saad, and converted a shot for his 14th goal of the season and the Wolverines' fifth goal of the night.
BGSU kept battling, and Topolic fired a shot from distance that sailed just left of the goal with 38 minutes on the clock. Midway through the period, Topolic uncorked another long shot that U-M backup 'keeper Tim Bergsma poked just wide. The shot was headed toward the upper-right corner of the frame, but Bergsma made a diving effort to deflect the ball out of bounds.
Freshman Marco Ilao, making his collegiate debut, headed a Jurtovski corner kick just wide of net with 13 minutes left. Soon after, Comiskey got the visitors on the scoreboard.
Galloway crossed the ball into the penalty area from the right side of the field, where Silva played a header back to the onrushing Comiskey. Comiskey released the Kraken, blasting a volley into the upper half of the net for his first collegiate goal, with 9:55 on the clock.
Comiskey's shot was the final one for either team on the night. For the game, each team had 13 shot attempts, with the Wolverines putting seven on goal to the Falcons' five. Both teams had four corner kicks in the match.
Blais worked a scoreless first half, making three saves. Bergsma played the final 45 minutes, allowing BGSU's goal and making one save.
Rosales played 60-plus minutes for the Falcons, making a pair of stops. Freshman Michael Wiest made his collegiate debut, playing the last 29-plus minutes of the match. Wiest was not called upon to make a save.
The Falcons take to the road again this weekend, returning to Mid-American Conference action with a Saturday (Oct. 30) contest at Northern Illinois University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. Eastern) at the Huskie Soccer/Track Complex in DeKalb, Ill.
