RedHawks Ruin Reunion with 4-3 Falcon Defeat
November 19, 2010 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green and Miami clashed Friday night as the RedHawks skated away with a 4-3 victory.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green and Miami tangled for the first time this season and for the first time since the hiring of BGSU head coach Chris Bergeron, Friday night. While reunions brought joy, laughter and camaraderie before the game the physical action on the ice revealed no friendships as the RedHawks held off Bowling Green with a 4-3 win at the BGSU Ice Arena.

Bowling Green's Brett Mohler (Fr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) made the game interesting and gave Falcon fans something to cheer about twice in the game. He scored the Falcons' first goal of the contest, nodding the game at one, on a short-handed goal late in the first period. The shorty was the first short-handed goal scored by a Falcon since David Solway (Sr., Green Bay, Wisc.) accomplished the feat on Feb. 21, 2009 in a 4-0 blanking of Michigan State at home.
Mohler made a move on RedHawk defenseman Chris Wideman in the neutral zone, causing a turnover and no one between he and Miami goaltender Cody Reichard. With Wideman on his tail, Mohler turned on the jets and skated hard toward the RedHawk cage before going low and beating Reichard.
The freshman scored his fourth goal of the season in the third to cut the RedHawk lead in half. Off of a shot by Cameron Sinclair (Jr., Windsor, Ontario) that caught the far side pipe, Mohler raced to catch the loose puck. While crashing hard into the slot, Mohler got enough of the puck and found a hole in Reichard's armor to half the lead for the Falcons, 4-2.
After pulling Falcon goaltender Nick Eno (Sr., Howell, Mich.) with 1:48 remaining in the game, the Falcons skated with an extra man to attempt the comeback. While possessing the puck much of that time, the Falcons struck when Chad Sumsion (Fr., Woodstock, Ontario) put two shots on Reichard, one wide and one deflected away by Reichard. James McIntosh (Jr., Holland Landing, Ontario) raced toward the net for the loose puck and with much contact being made near the crease stuck home the goal before crashing into the net, making the score 4-3 in favor of the visiting RedHawks.
Three second left of the clock was not enough for the Brown and Orange to muster one final shot and the score stood still with the RedHawks earning the victory.
The difference was made in the second period when the RedHawks scored three unanswered goals to erase a 1-1 tie that had been taken into the first intermission. Less than thirty seconds into the middle frame, Miami's Will Weber broke the tie with a one-timer from the blue line that beat Eno top shelf.
The 2-1 lead was taken until the 14th minute of play in the second when Reilly Smith added to the attack hitting a red-lighter from inside the far faceoff circle. Later in the period, Pat Cannone finished off a well-executed power-play attack receiving a pass through the slot from Smith and plugging home their fourth goal of the game.
The RedHawks spoiled the Falcons' chance to earn win number-800 on the day that BGSU head coach Chris Bergeron reunited with his alma mater and former team for the first time since becoming Bowling Green's head coach. Bergeron was an assistant for Miami for ten years (2001-2010) before joining the Falcons last spring.
Bowling Green (5-8-0, 2-7-0-0) will host Miami (7-3-3, 5-2-2-1) again on Saturday night with a chance to even the series and achieve that illustrious 800th victory in program history. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. EST at the BGSU Ice Arena (Bowling Green, Ohio).
