February 21, 2010 | Gymnastics
The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team extended its win streak to five straight overall and four consecutive inside Mid-American Conference play with a 193.175-191.875 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon inside Anderson Arena.
In the win the Falcons posted their second-highest team score of the year and captured first-place in three of four events (and all-around).
The fifth-straight win overall and fourth straight in MAC play is BGSU's longest since the 2001-02 season when that squad opened the year with 14 consecutive wins and finished MAC play 6-0. The Falcons' fifth win this year is one more than the Orange and Brown had in all of 2009 (4-10).
BGSU (5-2, 4-0 MAC) opened the afternoon on the vault, scoring a 48.350, their third highest performance on the event this season. The Orange and Brown were led by freshman Danielle Wishart, who won the event with a 9.800. Breanne Guy (9.725), Sunny Marchand (9.700) and Dawn Christman (9.625) finished fourth through sixth respectively.
In rotation two the Falcons moved over to uneven bars and posted a team score of 48.550, their highest in 2010. Guy and Kasey Fillmore finished one-two, with scores of 9.800 and 9.750. Guy's 9.800 was Bowling Green's top score this season on the bars. Overall, the Falcons claimed five of the top six spots with Morgan Balzer (9.675), Monica Eaton (9.675) and Amber Brewer (9.650) finishing fourth through sixth.
The Falcons slipped on balance beam, posting a 47.825, but Guy still managed to score a 9.750 to finish second in the event. Fillmore and Wishart finished in a tie for third with a score of 9.650.
In their final event BGSU scored a 48.450 on the floor exercise with the help of a 9.750 by Dawn Christman and Wishart. It was Wishart's second event win of the afternoon. Fillmore, Guy and Queenita Gamble finished in a tie for fourth with a score of 9.650.
Guy won the all-around with a score of 38.925 with scores of 9.725 (vault), 9.800 (bars), 9.750 (beam) and 9.650 (floor). Her all-around score was a season-best for the senior. Fillmore finished second with a 38.100.
The Falcons will return to the mat next Sunday (Feb. 28) with a trip to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a dual-meet contest with the Western Michigan Broncos. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
