FALCONS SWEEP MAC EAST AWARDS
After helping the team compile a 3-1 record over the last week of action, T.J. Blanton and Brennan Smith took both Mid-American Conference East Division awards after being named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Blanton hit for a .471 batting average (8-for-17) with a slugging percentage of 1.059 over the last four games. He notched nine RBI, six runs scored, three home runs and stole three bases on the week. The senior was a triple away from achieving the cycle in Friday's 12-8 win over the RedHawks after notching a single, double and solo home run. Blanton posted a trio of singles on Saturday and stole a pair of bases on the day in the Falcons' 7-6 win. The senior ended the weekend with a two-run home run in his first plate appearance of the weekend giving the Falcons an early 2-0 lead in Sunday's loss.
Smith tied a career and season high with 10 strikeouts against the RedHawks on Friday (4/30). He struck out the side in the third inning of Friday's 12-8 win and twice struck out two batters in an inning. He retired seven straight batters between the fourth and sixth inning, including sitting down the RedHawks in order twice in that time. In his 7.1 innings pitched, Smith allowed five hits and two walks, good for a WHIP of 0.95 on the day. He earned his fourth win of the season and has won his last three starts dating back to April 16.
Blanton has now earned the Player of the Week honor for the second time this season. Smith earns his first Pitcher of the Week of 2010 and the second of his career.
DID YOU SEE THE HOME RUN PARADE?!
The Falcons put a display on for the long ball convention last weekend (4/30-5/2) against Miami. Bowling Green totaled 11 home runs over the three day span, averaging 3.66 home runs per game. The Falcons on the season are averaging only one per game with 41 home runs in as many games. Of the ten home runs, six different Falcons hit those home runs and three players hit more than one. Dennis Vaughn and Derek Spencer hit three on the weekend and each had a two-home run day over the weekend. T.J. Blanton also hit two home runs against Miami while Jon Berti, Mark Galvin and Matthew Pitzulo had one.
SCORE LOTS, SCORE EARLY
In Bowling Green's 11-game hit streak the team made a living on getting ahead early and sustaining leads late. From 4/11 to 5/1, BGSU outscored their opponents 37-7 in the first two innings of the game. In fact, Bowling Green has outscored their opponents in every inning, except for the eighth (4-9). BGSU has scored the most runs in the first four innings of the game (59) as opposed to the latter five (54) and altogether had more than twice as many runs than the opposition in that time (127-59).
GALVIN CONTINUES HIGH IN HIT STREAK
Mark Galvin is working on rivaling teammate T.J. Blanton's 21-game hitting streak established earlier this season with a run of hits of his own. The senior out of Pickerington, Ohio currently is riding a career-high 15 game hit streak dating back to April 6. Since the hitting streak began at Michigan State, he has batted .425 with 25 of his 31 hits being a single. He also has three doubles and a pair of triples over this time. Of the 18 games he has had at least one hit in, eight have been multiple hit games including five two-hit games, two three-hit games and one four-hit game against OU on 4/23. The Falcons have an 13-5 record over this stretch, as well.
STREAK ENDS BUT REMAINS A TOP PERFORMANCE
If you have been living under a rock in the last three the Falcons have been on fire since April 11. Jump stated by a 32-10 loss to Ball State on April 10, the Falcons have since won 11 of their last 12 games. The Falcons rattled off 11 straight wins, including two weekend sweeps against MAC opponents and defeating the Cleveland State Vikings (4/28) for the second time this season. This is obviously the longest streak of wins this season for the Falcons and is the longest since 2008. The streak ended on May 2 when the RedHawks avoided a sweep in a 8-6 Sunday win.
