BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) by a score of 7-4 Sunday evening in the first live action of the season.
James McIntosh, Mike Fink, and Jake Sloat each scored a pair of goals in the contest, while Camden Wojtala added one of his own.
The Falcons came out flying in the first period, scoring just 11 seconds into the game. Wojtala stuffed home a goal on a scramble in front of UOIT goaltender Jeff Dawson, giving the Falcons the 1-0 lead.
Roughly 11 minutes later, BGSU struck again when Max Grover fed senior James McIntosh just below the right circle for a wrist shot that nailed the top right corner of the net.
Fink added a power play goal late in the first period to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Goaltender Andrew Hammond was perfect in the first period, stopping the only two shots he faced.
UOIT struck first in the second frame, scoring two power play goals on new BGSU goaltender Scott Zacharias, who relieved Hammond at the intermission. BGSU responded when McIntosh poked home his second goal of the evening on another scramble in front of the UOIT net. Despite being reviewed, the goal stood, giving the Falcons a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
Sloat opened the third frame for the Falcons scoring just 2:29 into the period. Sloat turned and fired a shot top shelf after circling around the net with a defender draped on his back.
After a UOIT goal on new Falcon goaltender Wyatt Galley, Sloat lit the lamp again, firing home a shot from the point on the power play. Each team would add a final goal to the score sheet, including Fink's second goal of the game, to give the Falcons the 7-4 victory.
BGSU dominated in the shot department, outshooting UOIT 48-17. The Falcons also dominated in the face-off circle, winning 64 percent of the draws.
Freshman Wyatt Galley was credited with the win, despite all three net minders seeing the ice.
BGSU is back in action at home this Friday evening (Oct. 7) against UConn.
