The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will hit the road for just the second time this season, as they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich., for a Saturday afternoon challenge with the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The 1 p.m. meet will take place inside the Bowen Field House.
BGSU Falls to Kent State
The Falcons dropped a 194.925-188.975 decision last Sunday (Feb. 6) to the Kent State Golden Flashes inside Anderson Arena. The Falcons competed with just five gymnasts on vault and floor as they continue to battle through several key injuries.
Fillmore Returning to Form
Junior Kasey Fillmore is coming off her strongest performance of the season, scoring a 9.750 on beam, a 9.700 on floor and a 9.525 on vault. All three scores were season-bests and her score on beam was the top Falcon score on that event in 2011.
Freshman Making Early Impact
Freshmen Megan Harrington, Lindsay Koch, Leah Miko and Megan Valentini have all seen significant action in 2001. Harrington is currently competing in three events and is coming off a career-best 9.650 on the balance beam. Koch had the best meet of her young career, scoring a 9.600 on bars and 9.650 on floor. Miko, a regular on beam and vault scored a 9.525 on vault this past weekend versus Kent State, a career-best. Valentini regularly sees action on beam, floor and vault, and just this past weekend set personal-bests on floor (9.750) and vault (9.525).
As a class this past weekend versus Kent State the Falcons used two first-year gymnasts on vault, three on bars, three on beam and three on floor. Of the 22 total routines, 11 were performed by freshman last Sunday.
Series With EMU
BGSU holds a slight 19-18 all-time series advantage over the Eagles, which includes a 193.175-191.875 victory last season at home. The Falcons have lost five straight road meets to EMU, with their last win in Ypsilanti coming during the 1998-99 season.
Scouting The Eagles
Eastern Michigan enters Saturday's contest with a 1-5 overall and 1-2 Mid-American Conference record. The Eagles are coming off a 191.675-190.550 loss to Western Michigan last weekend. Senior Nikole Viltz led the Green and White finishing first on both the vault and balance beam recording a 9.850 and 9.700 respectively. Viltz also finished tied for fourth on the floor exercise posting a 9.650.
The House That Roars
The Falcon gymnasts built a new nest in Anderson Arena in 2009 and that continues today. Since moving to Anderson Arena the Falcons are 5-5 inside the “House That Roars”. With volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball moving into the Stroh Center in 2011, Anderson Arena will solely be the home for BGSU gymnastics next season.
Falcons Announce 2011 Captains
BGSU head coach Kerrie Beach has announced that seniors Amber Brewer and Lexi Psichopaidas, along with red-shirt junior Kasey Fillmore and sophomore Danielle Wishart will serve as captains for the 2011 campaign.
Beach Leads BGSU
Head coach Kerrie Beach begins her fourth season at the helm of the BGSU gymnastics program. Last season Beach helped coach the team to a five-match win streak and a 4-2 conference record, both best in nearly a decade. She has an 19-32 overall record and is 9-12 in Mid-American Conference play.
Falcons Picked Sixth In 2011 Preseason Poll
The Mid-American Conference announced the 2001 gymnastics preseason poll on Jan. 4, with the Falcons picked to finish sixth among the seven team field. The poll was voted on the league's head coaches. Kent State was picked to win the league.
