BGSU Hockey Releases 2011-12 Schedule

The Falcons will play a 36-game slate highlighted by a season finale with Michigan and a trip to Bemidji State.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- With excitement already beginning to mount for hockey season, the Bowling Green Falcons have announced its 2011-12 schedule. Head coach Chris Bergeron and his team will play a 36-game slate to begin at the start of October and run through the conference tournament in mid-March. The Falcons will play 28 games against Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) competition and eight games out of the conference before reaching the CCHA Tournament in March.

The Falcons will feed into the Homecoming spirit with an exhibition match against Canadian university the Ontario Institute of Technology on Sunday, October 2 at the BGSU Ice Arena, beginning at 4:05 p.m.
Wasting no time to begin the home schedule, the Falcons invite the University of Connecticut for their first taste of regular season action on the weekend of Oct. 7-8. Bowling Green twice dodged a meeting with UCONN last season playing in two tournaments the Huskies also participated in but not playing them in either instance.
Continuing non-conference action, Bowling Green takes to the road for the first time against the University of Alabama-Huntsville to take on the Chargers, a team the Brown and Orange defeated three times last year by a combined score of 14-7.
As a part of a four-game road trip, the Falcons start action in conference in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. playing the Lake Superior State Lakers at Taffy Able Arena. Following their series against LSSU, the BGSU icers begin a six-game homestand, four of which against CCHA opponents. Notre Dame (Oct. 28-29) and Ferris State (Nov. 4-5) enter the BGSU Ice Arena first before Canisius College of the Atlantic Hockey conference finishes the home ice defense. Notre Dame is the first of four CCHA teams that the Falcons will play that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
This year marks the second straight year with a trip to The Goggin Center in Oxford, Ohio where Bowling Green faces off against the nationally-ranked Miami RedHawks on Nov. 18 and 19 to begin a streak of eight CCHA games.
After alternating home and away series with Alaska-Fairbanks and Michigan State, respectively, the Falcons engage in the first of two home-and-home sets with NCAA Tournament participant Western Michigan. In the first series, set to begin on Dec. 9, game one will be played at home while game two will take the team to Kalamazoo to play at Lawson Ice Arena.
Highlighting the non-conference schedule is a trip to Bemidji, Minn. for a two-game set with the Bemidji State Beavers to close out the 2011 year. The 2012 half of the schedule begins with a home series with the Ohio State Buckeyes on Jan 7-8. It also marks the first conference series that alternates start times with a Friday 7:05 p.m. start and Saturday's contest beginning with a 5:05 p.m. puck drop.
Five of the Falcons' next six games are on the road with away games taking place in Fairbanks, Alaska and Notre Dame, Ind. in addition to the second home-and-home set with Western Michigan. Conversely, the Brown and Orange finish up four of its next six games at home. The close of the regular season schedule includes a weekend date at home with Northern Michigan (Feb. 10-11), a trip to Big Rapids, Mich. to play Ferris State and then closing the doors at the BGSU Ice Arena for the season with a visit from NCAA runners-up, the Michigan Wolverines (Feb. 24-25).

Bowling Green finished 2010-11 with a 10-27-4 overall record, a five-game improvement under first-year head coach Chris Bergeron. The Falcons ended the season 3-21-1 in CCHA play. They played spoiler in the first round of the conference tournament when they became the first team in CCHA history to win a conference tournament series as the lowest seeded team in the tournament. The Falcons eliminated five-seed Northern Michigan in a double overtime thriller that ended with a Bryce Williamson goal just 34 seconds into the second extra frame.
