BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Day two of Major League Baseball's First Year Player Draft featured one of Bowling Green's own having his name called. Falcon shortstop Jon Berti was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round, 559th overall, of the 2011 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon. He has yet to sign with the team.

Berti is the 42nd Falcon to be selected in the MLB Draft dating back to 1965 when Wayne Burdette was the first by the New York Mets in the 27th round. The Troy, Mich. native is the first position player to be drafted since Derek Spencer in 2009 (45th round) and the highest drafted Falcon since Nolan Reimold was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2005 draft.
Prior to joining Bowling Green, Berti was drafted directly out of high school by the Oakland Athletics in the 35th round of the 2008 MLB Draft. He was one of four finalists for the coveted Mr. Baseball Award as a senior out of Troy High School after batting .467 and setting records for runs scored (66), hits (66), stolen bases (40-of-42) and triples (8) during his senior season.
In 2011, Berti led the Mid-American Conference in batting average hitting at a .412 clip for the year in conference play, shared a lead for triples (5) and stolen bases (13) while finishing second in hits with

Berti was one of ten MAC players to be selected in this year's MLB draft and the seventh overall. He was designated as a second baseman when drafted by the Blue Jays, a position he played while with the Brewster Whitecaps of the prestigious Cape Cod summer baseball league last year.
