The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost a 7-2 decision at Oklahoma State University in the series opener on Friday afternoon. Junior Andrew Heaney shut the Falcons down for a good portion of the afternoon, only yielding one run in 7.1 innings pitched. He also struck out 12 batters on the afternoon.
The Falcons would get on the scoreboard first, as T.J. Losby was driven in by Brandon Howard in the top of the second inning. The Falcons would not get anything more, as they would run themselves out of the inning with a missed squeeze attempt and a strikeout. Those mistakes would come back to haunt the Falcons, as the Cowboys would bat around in the home half of the second inning, and plate four runs.
In the third inning, the Cowboys would score another run, this time via the long ball from freshman Zach Fish, with two outs.
In the fourth, the Falcons would go one-two-three. Apthorpe would not allow Oklahoma State to score, but the fourth would be his final inning of the day. Ben Singer entered the ballgame in the fifth, and shut down the Cowboys over the next three innings. In the bottom of the eight, the Cowboys would plate two more runs, charged to Singer.
The Falcons would plate their second run of the game in the top of the ninth. Jake Thomas, pinch-hitting for T.J. Losby, would line out to second base to get the frame started. Following Thomas's out, Kubuski singled to right center for his second hit of the game. Alex Davison would pinch-hit for Brandon Howard, knocking Kubuski home on an RBI double to left center. The Falcons would load the bases after that in the ninth, but could not plate another run, keeping the score at 7-2, which would be the final.
For the day, the Falcons crossed home plate twice on ten hits. They also committed one error in the game. Oklahoma State tallied seven runs on ten hits, while committing one error as well. Andrew Heaney was the winning pitcher, moving his season mark to 1-0. Cody Apthorpe was charged with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on the Cowboys at 4 pm ET.
