Falcons Score 24 In Victory Over Malone
March 14, 2012 | Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball team banged out a school-record 30 hits on Wednesday afternoon in a decisive 24-11 victory over the Malone Pioneers. Jake Thomas also set a new school-record with six hits in the ballgame. With the win, the Falcons move to 5-11 on the season.
The Pioneers got off to a quick start in the game, as they scored two runs on three hits in the top of the first. The Falcons would respond however, as T.J. Losby knocked a three-run home run to left field for the 3-2 lead.
The Falcons would tack on another run in the bottom of the second with a Brandon Howard RBI single to score Alex Davison. Malone would tie the game in the top of the third with a two-run home run by Bob Suitca. The Pioneers would then take the lead in the fourth, on another two-run home run, this time by Adam Heideman.
The lead would be short lived, however, as the first nine Falcons would record hits in the home half of the fourth inning, knocking Malone starter Tim Newhart out of the game. The Falcons would go on to score 14 runs on 15 hits in the inning and led 18-6 after four. The Falcons got to Newhart for nine runs in just three innings. They would not treat reliever Alex Haines any kinder, as they knocked him around for nine runs in just 0.1 innings pitched. The Falcons' 14 runs in an inning was the highest since scoring 15 in an inning in 2003 against Pennsylvania.
The Falcons would go on to score three runs in the sixth on an Alex Davison three-run home run that cleared the scoreboard in right-centerfield. They would tack on their last three runs in the eighth on a Tyler Wynn home run, and a Brian Bien two RBI single.
Jake Thomas led the Falcons, going six-for-seven on the day, which set a school-record for hits in a game. The Falcons 30 hits in a game were also a school-record, surpassing the previous record of 27 hits in a game against Cincinnati on May 1, 1996. The 24 runs was the highest total for Bowling Green since scoring 28 in a win against Akron in 2002.
The Falcons will travel to Richmond, Kent. this weekend for a three-game set with the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky University.
