Falcons gear up for Broncos as homestretch heats up
The Bowling Green State University tennis team concludes the home schedule Friday afternoon (April 13), hosting Western Michigan University in a key Mid-American Conference dual. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.

In the event of inclement weather, the match would be moved to the Perrysburg Tennis Center. As of Thursday morning, Friday's forecast for the Bowling Green area calls for mostly sunny skies, a high of 65 degrees and winds from 10-15 miles per hour.
The Falcons will be looking to make history on Friday, as BGSU has never beaten Western Michigan. The Broncos hold a 37-0 series lead over the Brown and Orange.
BGSU takes an overall dual-match record of 8-7 into Friday's match, and the Falcons have won two-straight matches. After a 5-2 loss at MAC-leading Miami last Friday (April 6), BG bounced back with a 6-1 win at Ball State Saturday afternoon (April 7). The Brown and Orange then dismantled Valparaiso, 7-0, in less than 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon (April 10) at the PTC.
In that Valpo match, BGSU lost only four total games in the three doubles matches. Then, the Falcons dropped a total of just three games in the six singles contests. In all, BGSU competitors won a total of 96 games while losing only seven.
BGSU historical records are incomplete, but Tuesday marked the fewest games the Falcons have lost in a dual match since at least the 1998-99 season.
Against Valpo, no fewer than four Falcons won their singles matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0. That list included senior Jessica Easdale, junior Mary Hill and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland. Chiricosta and Reuland were perfect on the day, as they had teamed up for an 8-0 win in their doubles match vs. the Crusaders.
Juniors Katie Grubb and Maddy Eccleston enjoyed great success in their singles matches as well. Grubb lost only one game and Eccleston two against Valpo.
Another junior, Jade Johnson, teamed up with Hill for an 8-1 doubles win on Tuesday. Hill and Johnson have teamed up to win three consecutive matches and five of the last six contests at the third doubles flight.
The Chiricosta/Reuland duo has also won three-straight matches and five of the last six contests at the top doubles level. Reuland, who also teamed up with Eccleston during much of non-conference play, has won eight of the last nine doubles matches in which she has taken part.
Reuland has been on a roll as of late. The soph won all six of her matches in the Falcons' last three duals, and picked up a pair of awards in the process. On Wednesday (April 11), the Oswego, Ill., native was named a co-winner of the MAC's Female Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week Award. And, Reuland also was named the MAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. She earned both honors for the first time in her BGSU career.
Reuland has a 43-15 overall record this season, having topped her win total (40) for all of last year. She leads the 2011-12 Falcons in singles wins (21), doubles victories (22) and overall wins.
Reuland has moved onto several BGSU single-season records lists. Her 43 total wins ties her for 14th in school history, while her 22 doubles wins puts her in the same spot on that chart. She needs just one more singles win to move onto that list.
Several of Reuland's teammates also are poised to etch their names on the BG seasonal records lists. Chiricosta and Eccleston each have 39 total wins this season, while Hill has 38.
There has been a great deal of movement on the BGSU career lists over the last week as well. Eccleston now has 125 total wins as a Falcon, and has moved into 16th place in school history. She ranks 12th in career doubles wins (67) and is 18th in singles victories (58).
Chiricosta, just a sophomore, has broken into the top-25 on two lists. With 47 career singles victories, she is tied for 23rd place in BG annals. And, with 92 total wins, Chiricosta sits in 25th place on that list.
Hill, also in just her second year as a Falcon, has 89 total wins to rank 27th in school history. Easdale, who missed virtually all of her freshman season due to injury, picked up her 45th career singles win on Tuesday, and now is tied for 27th on that school list.
Heading into Friday's match, the Falcons sit in fourth place in the nine-team conference standings. BGSU is 3-2 in league play, behind Miami (6-0), Akron (4-1) and Eastern Michigan (3-1). The Falcons' two losses have come to MU and UA.
Western Michigan has an overall record of 13-10, and the Broncos are 2-3 in the MAC. The Broncos, as BG's travel partner, have faced the same five conference foes as the Falcons. WMU, like BG, opened the conference schedule with a 7-0 home win against Northern Illinois. The Broncos have lost three of the last four matches, however, with 5-2 losses against Akron, Buffalo and Miami.
Last weekend, Western -- like BG -- earned a split on the road. Like the Falcons, the Broncos picked up a 6-1 win at Ball State and lost to Miami by a 5-2 result. Head coach Betsy Kuhle's team is 9-3 in home matches and 4-7 in road contests this season to date.
As mentioned, the Falcons trail WMU, 37-0, in the all-time series between the teams. Last season, the Broncos picked up a 5-2 win in Kalamazoo (April 8, 2011). WMU also posted a 5-2 victory in the teams' last meeting in Northwest Ohio, two years ago at Keefe Courts (April 2, 2010). BGSU has posted as many as two points vs. Western in three of the last four regular-season meetings, after being held to a point or fewer in 11 consecutive matches from 1999 to 2008.
Friday's match marks the final home contest for BGSU's lone senior, Easdale. The Dublin, Ohio, native will be recognized in ceremonies prior to the match.
Following the WMU contest, the Falcons will hit the road for the final two regular-season matches. BGSU will face Eastern Michigan on Friday, April 20, before meeting Toledo the following afternoon (April 21). Then, the Brown and Orange will prepare for the MAC Championships, which run from April 26-29 in DeKalb, Ill.
