CINCINNATI, Ohio—A six-run, fourth inning was enough to carry the Bowling Green State University baseball team to a 9-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Xavier. Freshman Brett Fitzwater went a career-high five innings for his second win of the season. With the win, the Falcons are now 14-20 overall. The Orange and Brown will host Wright State on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Fitzwater lasted a career-high five innings on the afternoon, striking out three while scattering just five hits. Jason Link would relieve him, pitching the sixth and seventh innings. Devin Daugherty and Nick Bruns each pitched an inning to close out the win. The Falcons' bullpen did not allow a hit in the game.
The offense jumped on Xavier pitching all game long, knocking out 12 hits against the Musketeers. XU starter Vinny Nittoli lasted just 3.1 innings, surrendering seven runs to the Orange and Brown.
The Falcons would bat around in the top of the fourth inning, scoring six runs in the frame. The first four Falcons to come to bat in the inning would record hits, as the Orange and Brown started the inning with two singles and two doubles. Following two straight fielder's choices and a wild pitch, Xavier would turn to the bullpen, already trailing 4-0. The Falcons would not greet the new Xavier pitcher any kinder, extending the lead to 7-0 before the inning was over.
The score would hold until the top of the ninth, when junior T.J. Losby knocked his third home run of the season. Losby's two-run homer scored Brandon Howard and gave the Falcons a 9-0 lead.
Bruns would come on for some work in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two batters and retiring the side in order.
The Falcons have now won seven of their last eight overall. Following tomorrow's game with Wright State, the Orange and Brown will travel to Kent State for a three-game series against the Golden Flashes. The two teams are separated by just one game in the standings.
