Box Score
TOLEDO, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored four runs in the ninth inning on Friday afternoon at Toledo, pulling away for the 5-0 victory. Cody Apthorpe picked up the win, going eight innings and striking out four. Nick Bruns pitched the ninth to complete the shutout of the Rockets.
For the first eight innings, the Falcons clung to a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Patrick Lancaster would single with two outs, allowing Nick Glanzman to come around and score from second. Glanzman had walked to reach base in the inning.
The Bowling Green defense held the lead all day, making several outstanding plays behind Apthorpe. With one out in the bottom of the first, Andrew Kubuski would make a leaping play at the wall to record the second out. With the runner around second, Kubuski would throw to Brian Bien, who would relay it to Jeremy Shay at first for the inning-ending double play.
Kubuski extended his on-base streak to 17 games with a single in the top of the second inning. Kubuski reached base all four times in the game, going 2-for-2 with two walks.
In the bottom of the third, Kubuski would gun down a runner trying to stretch a base hit into a double. The Falcons would make their only error of the game in the inning, but Apthorpe would pitch out of trouble.
In the top of the fourth it appeared that the Falcons would extend their lead to 2-0, as Brandon Howard hit a fly ball which carried to deep center field. Toledo center fielder Ben Hammer would run the ball down to end the inning, crashing into the wall.
Glanzman would steal the show beginning in the fifth inning with his first career extra-base hit—a double into the right field corner.
Apthorpe would strand runners in scoring position in the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings, holding the Falcon lead at 1-0.
In the top of the ninth, Glanzman would once again double, scoring two runners to extend the lead to 3-0. Shay would follow with a double just three batters later to put the Falcons on top, 5-0.
Senior Bruns would close out the win in the bottom of the ninth, setting the Rockets down 1-2-3.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-19 (4-6 MAC). Bowling Green will look to win the Battle Of I75 series tomorrow afternoon, with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Scott Park in Toledo.
