Falcons Fall In Extra-Inning Thriller, 4-3
May 17, 2013 | Baseball
Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Both teams are playing for something this weekend at Steller Field, and it showed in Friday's effort by Bowling Green and Buffalo. Bowling Green, looking to clinch a spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament next week, fell to Buffalo by a final of 4-3 in ten innings. Buffalo improves to 32-21 (19-6 MAC) with the victory, while the Falcons drop to 19-28 (12-14 MAC). The two teams will finish the series—and regular season—tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Both starting pitchers were outstanding on Friday afternoon, as Falcons' righty Mike Frank went 7.1 innings. Frank exited after allowing just one earned run, but left two runners on base. The runners left on base by Frank would both come around to score, but not without high drama.
The Falcons started off hot, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. For the second straight day, the Orange and Brown struggled to manufacture runs, leaving 12 runners on base.
Brian Bien led off the bottom of the first with a perfectly-placed bunt single. Following Patrick Lancaster's groundout which moved Bien to second, he would swipe third with a stolen base. Jeremy Shay continued his scorching-hot streak, doubling down the left field line to score Bien.
On the afternoon, Shay was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. He doubled twice, improving his season average to .335.
Following Shay's double in the first, T.J. Losby would fly out to right field. With two outs in the inning, Jesse Rait would walk and Jake Thomas was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Buffalo starter Mike McGee was able to work out of the jam, keeping the score at 1-0.
Buffalo showed their resiliency once again on Friday, coming right back to score in the top of the second. UB's leadoff hitter in the frame would double, before Frank would record a strikeout. Frank struck out six batters in his 7.1 innings on Friday. With a runner on second and one out, Jon Mestas would reach on a fielder's choice to shortstop. Bien, who was moving to his right, would attempt to get the runner going from second to third, but the throw was a little bit high allowing the runner to slide in safely. With runners on the corners and one out, Frank would roll a routine double-play ball, but the Falcons were unable to get an out, allowing the tying run to come home on the error.
From there, Frank would retire 10 straight Buffalo hitters. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Falcons grabbed a 2-1 lead.
Nick Glanzman led off the home half of the seventh with a walk. Bien would sacrifice him to second, and Lancaster would move him to third on a ground out to the right side. Shay would come up big, again, doubling into the left field corner. The ball would kick around in the Buffalo bullpen allowing Shay to fly all the way around the bases on the play, but the umpires ruled the ball dead as it got stuck under the bullpen bench for a ground-rule double.
The eighth inning was dramatic, to say the least, as both teams pushed runs across in the inning. After recording an out, Frank would walk UB first baseman Alex Baldock. After a single through the left side, the Falcons would turn to Nick Bruns in the bullpen. Bruns would walk the first batter he faced, loading the bases with just one out.
The next batter would hit a fly ball to medium center field. Lancaster would settle under it, make the catch, and gun the ball towards home. Losby would snag the ball off the hop, and swipe-tag the runner sliding head first into home. The umpire would signal out, as it appeared Lancaster had thrown out the runner at the dish for the final out of the eighth, holding onto the Falcons 2-1 lead. However, the umpires would come together and reverse the call, saying the UB runner was safe at home, tying the game. With the Falcons' dugout unhappy, UB would get a go-ahead hit, taking a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
The Falcons wouldn't give up from there, as UB closer River McWilliams would come into the game for the second straight day. McWilliams had earned a four-inning save on Thursday.
Jesse Rait would single to lead the inning off. After Andrew Kubuski popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt for the first out, Brandon Howard would single. Matt Pitzulo would then hit a pitch to deep in the hole at short, but UB's shortstop Mike Burke's throw could not beat Howard to the bag at second. With the bases loaded, Glanzman would step up to the plate and deliver a game-tying sacrifice fly.
The game would go into extra innings, after both teams failed to score in the ninth.
In the tenth, Buffalo would lead off with a hustle-double down the right field line. Following a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third, the Falcons would walk Burke. The ninth hitter in the Bulls' lineup would come through, delivering a sacrifice fly to give Buffalo a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the tenth, the Falcons were unable to put together a game-tying rally, as McWilliams retired the Orange and Brown for the 4-3 Buffalo victory.
The final game of the 2013 regular season will begin tomorrow (May 18) at 1 p.m. The game will also be Senior Day, as Bruns, Pitzulo, Fred Sharp, and Drew Kuns will be honored beginning at 12:45.
TIEBREAKER SCENARIOS
(Updated at 9:00 p.m. Friday night)
***If Bowling Green wins on Saturday, they would clinch a spot in next week's Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament.
***If Bowling Green loses, they would finish the regular season with a 12-15 record. Below are the scenarios if a loss were to occur:
***If CMU wins Saturday, they would finish the regular season at 12-15
***Toledo and EMU will play each other in the final game of the regular season. UT (currently 12-14) and EMU (currently 12-14) are tied with the Falcons in the standings. Below are the possible finishes for both teams:
***UT wins (13-14) or loses (12-15)
***EMU wins (13-14) or loses (12-15)
***Bowling Green clinches a MAC Tournament berth if any of the following three scenarios occur:
***Bowling Green beats Buffalo on Saturday (1 p.m.)
***Western Michigan beats Central Michigan (1 p.m.)
***Eastern Michigan beats Toledo (3 p.m.)
***BGSU's head-to-head record versus above teams:
***BGSU vs. UT (3-0) BGSU wins head-to-head tiebreaker
***BGSU vs. CMU (2-1) BGSU wins head-to-head tiebreaker
***BGSU vs. EMU (1-2) EMU wins head-to-head tiebreaker
***If Bowling Green were to end the regular season in a three-way tie with Central Michigan and Toledo at 12-15, the Falcons would qualify by virtue of their 5-1 record head-to-head with those two schools.
***If Bowling Green were to end the regular season in a three-way tie with Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan, the Falcons would not qualify. If a three-way scenario were to occur, it would mean the Falcons were 0-3 against Buffalo.
