BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Miami was able to break open a one run game on Saturday afternoon, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth to defeat Bowling Green 9-1. T.J. Losby accounted for the only run of the game for the Orange and Brown, knocking a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. The home run was Losby's team-leading sixth of the season.
Following a slow start for Falcon hurler Mike Frank, he would settle in and retire 12 straight batters. However, Miami starter Mac Thoreson kept the Falcons at bay, maintaining a 1-0 lead until his offense could break through.
Thoreson was awarded the win for his efforts, going eight innings and allowing just one run. He outdueled Frank, who lasted 5.1 innings and struck out six.
Both teams stranded seven runners in the game, but the RedHawks would outhit BGSU 13-to-6.
In the top of the sixth, five of the first six RedHawks would single, forcing the Falcons to turn to the bullpen for junior Ethan McKenney. McKenney would get out of it, but by the end of the inning, Miami held a 6-0 lead on the power of six hits in the inning.
Losby would get the Falcons on the board with his solo shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be all that the Orange and Brown could muster on the afternoon.
The RedHawks would add to their run total in the seventh and eighth innings, increasing the lead to 9-1.
For the second straight appearance, true freshman Devin Daugherty pitched well. On Saturday, Daugherty did not give up an earned run, striking out one in his two innings of work.
Patrick Lancaster was the only Falcon to record two hits on the afternoon.
The Falcons and RedHawks will square off in the rubber match of the series tomorrow (May 5) at 1 p.m. Nick Bruns will make his first start since 2011 for the Falcons.
