Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—A three-run first inning for Ball State was too much for the Bowling Green State University baseball team to overcome on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 5-2 decision at Steller Field. The Cardinals got revenge after losing to the Orange and Brown back on April 9 at BSU's Ball Diamond, 7-5. The Falcons (16-25; 10-11 MAC) will be back in action this weekend with a series at Ohio.
Tuesday's game started in a similar fashion to Sunday's game versus Miami, as the Falcons surrendered three quick runs in the top of the first. For the second straight game, a Falcon pitcher was making his first start of the 2013 campaign. Tuesday's game was freshman Devin Daugherty's turn, as the right-handed pitcher from Wooster, Ohio was making his first collegiate start, as well.
Daugherty would end up suffering the loss, but surrendered just two earned runs over three innings of work. After a shaky top of the first, Daugherty settled down to retire seven straight in order over the remainder of his outing.
In the bottom of the third, the Falcons added their first tally of the day to get to within 3-1. After a leadoff bunt single, Brian Bien advanced to second on a throwing error by the Ball State starting pitcher. With two outs and Bien on third, junior T.J. Losby would single to score Bien.
The Falcons would quickly add another run in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to two straight misplays by Ball State's third baseman. After the first two batters were retired in the inning, Alex Davison would reach on a fielding error. After a stolen base, Bien would single to right field to score Davison, as the Falcons closed to within 3-2.
That would be all the offense the Orange and Brown could muster on the afternoon, as BSU starter Chris Lovejoy went six innings for the victory. Tyler Jordan closed out the ball game going the final three innings for his third save of the season.
Levi Fisher, Ben Singer, Ethan McKenney, and Trevor Blaylock combined to pitch the final four innings of the contest, allowing just four hits without surrendering a run. Chris Miller also appeared on the mound for Bowling Green. In total, 21 Bowling Green Falcons appeared in the game, with just four starters remaining in the game through the final out.
The Falcons will play their final road games of the season this weekend, traveling to Athens, Ohio for a three-game series with the Ohio Bobcats. Friday's first pitch will be at 6:00 p.m., with Saturday's at 3:00 p.m., and Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
