Sophomores Dufour and Sholl Lead The Falcons Past No. 10/11 Miami, 3-2

Sophomore forward Kevin Dufour lit-the-lamp twice, while sophomore netminder Tomas Sholl turned away 22-of-24 shots to led the Falcons over nationally-ranked Miami in its season opener.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated No. 10/11 Miami University, 3-2, at the BGSU Ice Arena on Friday night (Oct. 10) in both squad's season opener. Playing in front of 2,118 Falcon faithful, sophomore Kevin Dufour scored two goals – including the game-winner with 10:34 remaining in the third period – while sophomore goaltender Tomas Sholl turned away 22-of-24 shots.
"We want to be aggresive early and that's the way we want to play," head coach Chris Bergeron said. "They came out flying and we wanted to start the game strong and I was please with the effort tonight."
The win was the Orange and Brown's first against Miami since Jan. 4, 2008. The Falcons (1-0-0) – who went 2-for-6 on the power play – outshot the RedHawks (0-1-0), 38-24 in the game. Bowling Green held Miami scoreless over two power play attempts, as the Falcons never trailed in the game.
Brent Tate chipped in with a goal for BGSU, and defenseman Nolan Valleau registered two assists – his first two points of his career.
The Falcons took leads of 2-0 and 3-1. However, a Riley Barber goal for Miami with 7:45 remaining in the game took the game down to the wire. The RedHawks pulled their goalie with 1:33 left on the clock, but Sholl and the Falcons were able to hold on for the victory.
Bowling Green raced out to a quick start, as Dufour recorded his first goal just 1:55 into the contest. Mark Cooper forced a turnover in the Miami zone and shoveled it across to a wide-open Dufour, who was able to put the puck in before goaltender Ryan McKay could recover.
"We moved the puck tonight really well and it felt great to get back out on the ice with my teammates," Dufour said. "We were really excited to play someone else. I was glad I could contribute tonight."
BGSU built on its lead, but not before Miami had a couple of chances to knot the game at 1-1. Sholl made a point-blank glove save on a RedHawk power play, prior to making a pad save on a 2-on-1 rush with just 14 minutes left in the period.
The Orange and Brown then capitalized, as Tate deflected home a Valleau shot from the point to give BGSU a 2-0 advantage at the 7:43 mark while the Falcons were on a 4-on-3 power play. Freshman Brandon Hawkins notched his first career point on the play, as the forward was credited with an assist. Twenty seconds later, Ben Paulides put Miami on the board to draw within a goal at 2-1.
Heading into the third period, the Falcons held a 26-19 shot advantage.
Dufour's second tally of the evening at the 9:26 mark of the third period put the Falcons on top, 3-1. Ben Murphy worked the puck into the Miami zone, and fired a shot that was blocked by a RedHawk defenseman. Dufour was able to get to the loose pack and bang it home before McKay slid to his left.
The Falcons turned in a strong defensive effort in the final frame, holding Miami to just five final-period shots. Both teams traded timeouts with under two minutes to play, and the Falcons were able to hold onto the win despite Miami's extra attacker.
"We really wanted to focus on playing a strong defensive game and I thought we went out and put together a strong effort," Sholl said. "Miami is a good team and they fought hard tonight and gave us a great challenge."
Six Falcon freshmen made their collegiate debuts in the win, and recorded a total of three points. BGSU blocked 11 shots and leading the way was freshman Mark Friedman, who had three. Jakob Reichert registered three shots, while fellow freshman Tyler Spezia put one puck on net.
Bowling Green will travel to the Goggin Ice Center on Sunday to complete the home-and-home series with the RedHawks. Puck is set to drop at 5:05 p.m.
