Falcons Head To Clarkson For Non-Conference Weekend Series

The Falcons will be the first team from the newly formed WCHA to play the Golden Knights. The Orange and Brown will enter the series 1-1-0 in non-league play.

The Last Time
The Bowling Green State University earned its first win of the season on Oct. 16, 2010 against Clarkson University, earning a 3-0 shutout win over the Golden Knights. Falcons' netminder Andrew Hammond turned away 31-of-31 saves, earning his first victory as a member of the Orange and Brown and his first career shutout. Hammond did his part in stopping the Clarkson power play cold. The Golden Knights went 0-for-4, including back-to-back CU power plays in the second period. Hammond stopped seven shots when the Knights were a man up.
About Clarkson
The Golden Knights entered the 2014-15 campaign as one of the most historic programs in the NCAA. Clarkson began its program back in 1920, and has compiled over 70 winning seasons. The Golden Knights are the fastest Division I college hockey program to compile over 1,000 victories, marking one of only a few to accomplish that milestone. CU has also compiled a .622 winning percentage all-time, which is among the best in the nation. The Golden Knights have played in the ECAC since 1962 and has won five titles and has made 20 appearances in the NCAA tournament. Clarkson racked up a 21-17-4 overall record in 2013-14 under head coach Casey Jones, placing fifth in its league.
The Series
Clarkson holds a 12-14-1 all-time lead in the head-to-head series in 27 meetings against each other. The Falcons and Golden Knights first-ever meeting dates back to Jan. 12, 1970 where CU defeated the Orange and Brown by a score of 4-3. The Falcons, however, have fared well against Clarkson over its last five meetings, going 4-1-0. Bowling Green has outscored the Knights 14-9 over the last five meetings.
The Last Time Out
The Falcons swept the University of Alabama in Huntsville to open Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play, shutting out the Chargers 5-0 on Friday night before dropping the Chargers 4-1 on Saturday evening. The weekend sweep over UAH allowed the Falcons to take four points to begin league play. Kevin Dufour continued his hot stick, netting three more goals over the weekend, while freshmen Brandon Hawkins totaled four points (2g, 2a) against UAH.
Fire Away
The Falcons have continued their offensive numbers from a season ago, averaging 3.50 goals-per-game through four games. Last season, the Orange and Brown averaged a team-high 3.05 GPG in the Bergeron era, and this season the Falcons are again being aggressive on the offensive end. BGSU has scored 14 total goals in four games, which is tied for the most in the WCHA. The Falcons have also placed 154 shots on goal through four games, which trails only Lake Superior (156) for the most shots on net in the young season.
Power Play Numbers
The Falcons continued their strong play while holding a man advantage on the ice, going 4-for-12 (33%) on the power play over the weekend against UAH. The Orange and Brown also received a shorthanded goal from Mitch McLain –marking his first collegiate goal-- in the first period of Friday night's game, giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead at the time. BGSU has outscored its opponents 7-1 on the power play, which is good for a plus-6 margin in that category. In all, Bowling Green is 7-for-23 (30.4%) on the year, which is second in the WCHA.
Going For The Kill
Speaking of special teams, the Falcons went a perfect 9-for-9 on the penalty kill over the weekend against UAH. The Orange and Brown are a perfect 3-0-0 when they hold their opponents scoreless on the power play in a game for the season. In all, Bowling Green is 14/15 (93.3%) on the kill, which ranks third in the WCHA.
Dufour With More!
Sophomore Kevin Dufour scored three more goals to add to his already impressive start this season. The sophomore forward has compiled a NCAA-leading six goals in four games, averaging 1.50 goals per game. The left-handed winger has lit-the-lamp at least one time in each of the Falcons' first four games, including two games with multiple goals. The Quebec City native is already three goals away from his total in 2013-14 (9), while scoring 43 percent of the Orange and Brown's goals for the season.
Freshmen Contribution
The Falcons had seven freshmen play over the weekend at UAH for coach Bergeron. Brandon Hawkins, Mitch McLain and Jakob Reichert all netted their first collegiate goals over the weekend, while Nolan Valleau and Mark Friedman continued to contribute offensively as blue liners. Over the weekend, the freshmen combined for four goals and seven assists. In all, the freshmen have totaled five goals and 13 assists (18 points) for 46 percent of the Falcons' scoring this season.
More Assists For Valleau
Rookie defenseman Nolan Valleau continued his hot start to the 2014-15 campaign last weekend, posting two more assists in two games. The rookie has posted at least one assist in each of the Falcons' four games. Valleau is currently tied for first in the NCAA with six assists. The Novi, Mich. native also leads the team with a plus-4 on-ice rating, and also has no penalties on the season.
Pohlkamp's Strong Weekend
Sophomore forward Matt Pohlkamp had a strong showing against UAH, helping the Falcons take four points over the weekend. Pohlkamp, a Baxter, Minn. native, tallied one goal and two assists against the Chargers. For the season, the right-handed winger has compiled a line of 1-3-4, and is currently on a three-game point streak.
More Sophomore Contribution
Sophomore centerman Pierre-Luc Mericer also had a strong weekend for the Orange and Brown, posting back-to-back games with two assists. Mercier currently has four of the eight assists produced by the sophomores. In all, the sophomore class has produced seven goals and eight assists for 15 points (38%) for Bowling Green.
Impressive Debut
Chris Nell made his first collegiate start between the pipes on Friday, Oct. 17 against UAH. The rookie goaltender turned away all 20 shots fired his way, helping the Green Bay, Wisc. Native earn his first victory in his career. Not only did the rookie grab a win in his debut for the Orange and Brown, Nell became the first rookie netminder to shutout a divisional opponent in his collegiate debut since Bob Petrie shutout Ohio State, 6-0, in the 1993-94 season.
Sholl Along!
Two starts, two wins. That's what sophomore goaltender Tomas Sholl has done with his first two starts between the pipes for the Orange and Brown. The Hermosa Beach, Calif. native has logged 119:54 minutes in the net for the Falcons, while ranking third in the WCHA with a 1.50 goals against average. The sophomore netminder also holds a .932 save percentage and has made 41 saves in two starts.

GAME 1: The Clarkson University Hockey team put in a good effort on the road, but came out on the short end of tightly played defensive game, suffering its first loss of the season with a 2-1 setback to the University of Vermont before 4,007 fans at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington on Friday night. A long-time ECAC Hockey rival now playing in Hockey East, Vermont sandwiched a late first-period goal and an early third-period power-play marker around a second-period score by the Knights to gain its third straight win in the series. Vermont held a slight 24-21 shot advantage and went 1-of-3 on the power play while killing off both of the Knights' man-advantage opportunities.
GAME 2: A renewed rivalry with an old ECAC Hockey foe did not go as planned for the Clarkson University Hockey team over the weekend as the University of Vermont completed a two-game sweep of the Golden Knights with a 3-0 non-league victory before 2,650 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday.The Catamounts, who now play in Hockey East, stretch their current winning streak in the series to four games after their visit to Potsdam since November 13, 2004. Vermont defeated the Green and Gold 2-1 in Burlington on Friday night. Clarkson, which stands at 2-2, hosts WCHA foe Bowling Green in a two-game series at Cheel next weekend.
