Falcons score two in the second, but fall 3-2 on Friday in Atlanta
ATLANTA, Ga.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team took a 2-0 lead on Friday at perennial national power Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets would use a three-run third inning to defeat the Falcons 3-2 on Friday at Russ Chandler Stadium. With the loss, BGSU falls to 2-5 and has lost three consecutive games. Georgia Tech improves to 5-4 on the 2014 season.
The Falcons stranded just four runners on Friday afternoon, but hit into four double plays. Bowling Green had several opportunities once it fell behind 3-2 in the ballgame, but could not push across the tying run in the losing effort. Cody Apthorpe (1-2) was charged with the loss, despite allowing just three runs in six innings of work.
The Orange and Brown jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning. Senior T.J. Losby led off the inning by drawing a walk. GT's centerfielder would misplay a line drive off the bat of Logan Walker in the next at bat, and the Falcons found themselves with runners on first and second with nobody out in the inning. After a strikeout, Jesse Rait would single to right field to load the bases.
With the bases loaded and just one out in the second, centerfielder Patrick Lancaster would give the Falcons a 2-0 lead with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Losby and Walker. The Falcons would leave a runner on third base in the inning, though, as a caught stealing and strikeout ended the inning.
Georgia Tech would respond with a three-run bottom of the third. After a leadoff double and hit batter, a bunt single would load the bases with nobody out. Apthorpe would walk the next batter to get Georgia Tech on the board, and Matt Gonzalez's RBI single up the middle would score two more Yellow Jackets, giving them a 3-2 lead.
Despite trailing by just one after three innings, the Falcons would not be able to capitalize off of Georgia Tech's strong pitching staff. Starter Jonathan King went 7.1 innings on Friday for the win, and Dusty Isaacs picked up his first save of the year.
The Falcons and Yellow Jackets will continue their series tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 1) at 2:00 p.m. Mike Frank will oppose Cole Pitts on the mound.
