Anchorage, Alaska – Freshman Chris Pohlkamp scored his first career goal but the No. 12 ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team fell behind early and never quite recovered in a 4-2 loss to Alaska Anchorage Saturday night.
With the win, Alaska Anchorage continues its strong start and improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. For the Falcons, it was the first WCHA contest of the year and BGSU fell to 3-2-1 overall.
It took Alaska Anchorage just 94 seconds to take the lead as Blake Tatchell beat Tommy Burke blocker side on the first shot of the game. It was Tatchell's first point of a three-point night (adding two assists later) and the fourth goal of his season.
BGSU dug in and worked hard to tie the game late in the first. Pohlkamp took a shot from just inside the blue line and Anchorage goalie Olivier Mantha was screened as the puck found its way to the back of the net with 2:35 left in the first.
However, the momentum did not last long as Anchorage took the lead back only 41 seconds later as Cam Amantea swatted a rebound out of the air and past Burke for the 2-1 lead.
Anchorage added two more goals in the second, one on a power play, to build a 4-1 advantage. The first goal of the period came just after the Falcons had killed off 42 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play but were still a man short.
In the third period, BGSU had three power play opportunities but the Falcons were unable to find the back of the net with the man advantage. Bowling Green did score late to cut into the deficit as Sean Walker found Mitch McLain on a long outlet pass for a breakaway goal with just under a minute left, but it was not enough and UAA was able to close out the final seconds of the contest. It was McLain's first goal of the season after recording 10 as a freshman a year ago.
"Their first shot of the game went in and we were chasing from there," BGSU head coach Chris Bergeron said. "The only sign of life we had was when we tied up the game and then they went back up less than a minute later. They were ready to play and they deserve full credit for the win."
Bowling Green outshot Anchorage 24-23 for the game but the Falcons were 0-for-4 on the power play, compared to 1-for-3 for the Seawolves. The Falcons also won 37-of-61 faceoffs with Mark Cooper going 17-6 in that area. Friedman recorded a team-high four shots on goal and had a +2 on-ice rating. Walker added a team-high three blocked shots.
Bowling Green and Alaska Anchorage will close out the weekend Sunday with a 6:07 pm ET start time as the Falcons look for their first WCHA win of the 2015-16 season.
