Late Offensive Surge Lifts Falcons To Series Victory
March 01, 2015 | Baseball
EMERSON, Ga.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored 11 runs in the final three innings on Saturday night, pulling away from Eastern Kentucky for a 15-5 win. With the win, the Falcons win the series and improve their record to 3-3 on the season. EKU fell to 4-6 with the loss.
The Falcons outscored the Colonels 13-1 from the fifth inning on at LakePoint Sports Complex Saturday, as the BGSU bullpen did not allow a hit over the final five innings. Brett Fitzwater was credited with the win, pitching three hitless innings. Tony Landi finished things off, striking out two batters in two innings of work.
Trey Keegan capped off an impressive weekend by reaching base five times on Saturday night, going 2-for-3 with three walks in the game. He scored three runs and had two runs batted in. Every Falcon in the starting lineup had at least one hit in the win, while eight players reached base at least twice.
The Orange and Brown led 2-0 early on, but EKU would bounce back to take a 4-2 lead over the Falcons after four innings of play. Played in cold temperatures in Emerson, Ga., the Falcons' bats would heat up beginning with a run in the fifth and the game-tying run in the sixth inning.
BGSU would take a lead in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on just one hit in the inning. Brian Bien got things started off with a one-out walk. Keegan would single to advance Bien into scoring position. With the Falcons threatening, cleanup hitter Matt Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bien would come across to score following a walk to Greg Basalyga. The Falcons scored three more runs in the inning—increasing their lead to 8-4—on a walk and error by the Colonels. The Falcons added two runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to pull away from Eastern Kentucky for the series win.
With the win, Bowling Green's record improves to 3-3, marking the first time since 2008 that the Falcons have started the season with at least three wins through their first nine games of the year. BGSU will look to continue their early-season winning ways next weekend when they travel to Campbell University for a three-game series against the Camels. The series will begin on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. ET.
