Falcons Fall In Battle Of I-75
April 29, 2015 | Baseball, The Battle Of I-75
TOLEDO, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team was unable to complete the season sweep over arch-rival Toledo for the second straight season, losing to the Rockets 13-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The Battle Of I-75 game was played at Scott Park. With the loss, the Falcons are now 17-23 heading into their weekend series at home against Akron. This week's midweek series, which BGSU and UT split, did not count towards the Mid-American Conference standings.
"Obviously we were expecting a better performance against our rival today," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "Our sights are still set on MAC play this weekend and our very important series against Akron. We hope to see a lot of fans at Steller Field all weekend long cheering on the Falcons."
Toledo jumped on the Falcons early, scoring all 13 runs in the first four innings of the game. Bowling Green did end the game with 10 hits, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
After allowing six runs in the first and two more in the second, BGSU relief pitcher Trevor Farrell worked a scoreless inning in the bottom of the third inning. Rob Zenas shined in relief for the Falcons, allowing just one hit in a career-high 3.0 IP. He also struck out three batters, which was a new career mark.
The Falcons got on the board in the top of the fourth with a run, as Trey Keegan led the inning off with a solo home run down the left field line. For Keegan it was his fourth home run of the season and marked his 30th RBI of the season.
BGSU added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, after Toledo had scored five in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the fifth, true freshmen Justin Mott (single) and Cody Callaway (double) recorded hits to start things off. Kory Brown then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Mott and bring the Falcons second run across.
After a walk to Brandon Howard, Keegan was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out. A sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Randy Righter scored the third run of the game. With Howard on third and Keegan on first, the Falcons attempted a double steal and were successful. Keegan took off for second and beat the throw, allowing Howard to race home from third for the fourth run.
BGSU got back on the board in the top of the eighth, as Greg Basalyga and Jesse Rait reached to start the inning. Hunter Clanin was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. RBIs by Mott and Glanzman brought home runs in the inning to make it 13-6.
Wes Rickenberg also worked a scoreless inning for the Falcons on the mound, retiring the Rockets in order in the eighth. After fielding two straight comebackers, Rickenberg recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
BGSU will return home this weekend, as the Falcons host Akron for three games at Warren E. Steller Field beginning on Friday afternoon. The Falcons and Zips enter the weekend tied in the MAC standings at 9-9. First pitch on Friday will be at 3:05 p.m., while both Saturday and Sunday will start at 1:05 p.m.
