Commit Ryan Bednard Selected In NHL Draft

Sunrise, Fla. – Bowling Green State University commit Ryan Bednard, a Macomb, Mich. native, was selected in the seventh round of the 2015 National Hockey League Draft Saturday, being picked by the Florida Panthers in the seventh round, pick No. 206 overall.

"We are all very proud of Ryan," BGSU hockey coach Chris Bergeron said. "Getting drafted in the NHL is a great accomplishment. We are excited for him to be part of our program when he finishes his junior career."

A goalie with the Johnstown Tomahawks in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) during the 2014-15 campaign, Bednard went 16-16-5 and had a 2.66 goals against average and .913 save percentage. At 6-feet-3 and 179 pounds, he entered the draft ranked 22^nd among North American goalies by NHL Central Scouting. His brother, Shane, will be a freshman with the Falcons in the fall.

He committed to a program that has improved its win total in each of the past five years under Bergeron, who received a five-year contract extension earlier this month. Winners of the 1984 NCAA Division I National Championship, the program's 23-11-5 record a year ago was the best since the 1995-96 team won 26 contests. The team had three members of the WCHA's All-Rookie Team and returns 88 percent of its goal-scoring and its entire goalkeeping unit from a year ago. BGSU was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country and remained among the nation's top 20 for the entire season once entering the polls in November.

Bednard is the second Falcon drafted in as many years by the NHL. Sophomore Mark Friedman was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers with the 86^th overall pick a year ago.
