Baylis Goal Call 1-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green hockey team (8-9-2, 7-5-1 WCHA) fell to Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival Michigan Tech (11-7-3, 10-3-2 WCHA) Friday evening in the Slater Family Ice Arena by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Stephen Baylis marked the lone goal for the Falcons, making it his second of the season.

The pair of conference rivals were held scoreless through the first period, but the 20:00 of play was far from lacking action. The Falcons outshot the Huskies by a 12-8 mark, and held the offensive edge throughout the second half of the period and through back-to-back power plays. Major scoring chances came when junior Mitch McLain made a pass through the legs to senior Matt Pohlkamp on the power play, although freshman goaltender Angus Redmond was there for the save.

Later in the period, junior Tyler Spezia was robbed of a quick wrist shot destined for the back of the net when the Huskies goaltender sprawled out for the save to stop the puck with a pad.

It wasn't until 6:50 into the second period when Chris Pohlkamp picked up a puck down low in the Bowling Green zone, and poked it back to freshman Frederic Letourneau along the wall. Once he hit center ice, Letourneau passed it over to sophomore Stephen Baylis, who took the puck all the way down, and sniped the top left corner of the net. The even-strength goal was Baylis' second of the season, and put the Falcons up 1-0 against the Huskies.

On the opposite end of the ice, junior goaltender Chris Nell came up big for the Falcons, as he stopped two critical Michigan Tech breakaway chances. First, Nell made a big glove save on the penalty kill to keep it 0-0 in the final minutes of the first period, and made another butterfly save in the second to hold onto the Falcons 1-0 lead. On the night, the Green Bay, Wis. native marked a season-high of 33 saves.

Nearing the end of the period, Michigan Tech was able to even the scoring field when they tied it up with a power play goal. The Huskies took a shot from the point and were able to find the top right corner of the net with the long shot, making the teams all squared up heading into the final stanza in the conference matchup.

With 8:04 remaining in the final stanza, senior Kevin Dufour struck broke free from the play in the Falcons zone, and strode down the ice with a breakaway opportunity, but went just wide of the net. The chance was one of the best for the Bowling Green squad in the final period of play.

Michigan Tech was then able to earn its first lead of the weekend with a shorthanded goal that was picked up on a turnover. The Huskies special teams play continued to be the game changer, as Michigan Tech marked a third goal on the night on the power play with just 1:18 remaining in regulation to secure the game by a 3-1 mark.

It was just the sixth time this season, and the first time since Nov. 12 that the Falcons were outshot, as Michigan Tech put up 36 shots on goal to Bowling Green's 26. Five different Falcons marked three shots on the night.

The Bowling Green hockey team will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m. when it hosts Michigan Tech for the WCHA series finale.
