BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by the Seattle University Redhawks Saturday afternoon at Bannerwood Park. Bowling Green dropped a 7-0 decision in the first game, and fell 9-3 in the second game.
With the sweep, the Falcons are now 1-4 on the young season, while Seattle sits at 4-3.
"We just haven't been scoring enough runs this season," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Aside from our first game, we haven't been able to put together the three phases. Tomorrow will be a big test of our character."
For the first time all season, the Falcons played from ahead, when they scored two runs in the second inning of game two of the doubleheader.
After Logan Giddings drew a one-out walk, Cam Daugherty moved him over to second with a single into left field. Cody Callaway then drove a single into left, and the outfielder misplayed the ball, allowing the ball to go all the way to the wall – both runners came around to score.
BGSU starter Andrew Lacinak got the much-needed shutout inning the next half frame, as he recorded two-consecutive outs with runners on second and third.
However, Seattle went on to score nine of the game's final 10 runs en route to the victory. Lacinak was tagged with the loss. The lefty logged five innings, yielding 10 hits and four runs (three earned). Lacinak struck out one and walked one in his season debut.
Tony Landi also made his season debut, taking over for Lacinak, and pitched two innings of one-run ball.
The Falcons inched to within one at 4-3, and had the tying run at third in the seventh with less than two outs, but BGSU could not tie the ballgame. Seattle then scored one in the bottom half of the frame, and four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Callaway and Nick Glanzman both had two hits for the Falcons. For Glanzman, it was his fourth multiple-hit game of the season. He's had at least one hit in all five games.
Game one was dominated by Seattle starter Tarik Skubal, who pitched six shutout innings in the seven-inning game. Skubal yielded just two hits, and struck out 10 while walking none. The Falcons were out-hit, 9-3, and trailed early in the ballgame, as Seattle scored three in the first and four in the second.
BGSU starter Zac Carey was knocked out of the game in the second inning, but Brad Croy and Mat Szabo combined to shutout the Redhawks over the final 4.1 innings of the contest. Croy pitched masterfully in his 3.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit. He allowed three walks, and struck out one. Szabo then threw a scoreless sixth in his collegiate debut, earning his first-collegiate strike out in the process.
Bowling Green and Seattle will conclude the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. EST. The Falcons are scheduled to take on Dayton on the road March 1 at 3 p.m., before competing at the Elon Tournament in Elon, N.C. March 4-6.
