SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
The Seattle University Redhawks opened the 2016 season with a four-game set in Moraga, California against Saint Mary's College. After dropping the first three games of the series, Seattle showed its potential and avoided the sweep with a 4-1 win. Sophomore Tarik Skubal was sensational on the mound, recording 13 strikeouts across seven shutout innings. Skubal was a freshman All-American last season, while senior Ted Hammond – Seattle's Opening Day starter – led the team in ERA (2.63) in 2015. Offensively, Seattle returns two of its three players that hit over .300 last season. Griffin Andreychuk led the team in RBI in 2015 with 42 and hit .306, while Sheldon Stober was close behind with a .304 average to go along with 39 RBI. Seattle finished the 2015 season with a 31-27 recorded, including an impressive 19-8 mark in WAC play.
SCHMITZ SAYS…
"We were real happy with the way that we played on Opening Day last Friday," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But Saturday was a learning experience for us. We can't be content with just winning on Friday – we need to show up and play each day. Our approach in Seattle will be to put together a full weekend."
97TH SEASON FOR FALCON BASEBALL, 26TH SEASON FOR DANNY SCHMITZ
The Orange and Brown have complied a 1,615–1,407–27 record across 96 seasons of baseball. Danny Schmitz has been at the helm of the program for 25 of those seasons, and will be beginning his 26th season as head coach this weekend. Schmitz owns a record of 663–638–5 at BGSU, guiding the Falcons to seven divisional crowns, four MAC regular-season titles, and three MAC Tournament championships. The Falcons' skipper won his 600th game at Bowling Green during the 2014 campaign, and currently sits with 662 victories – more than any active coach in the Mid-American Conference.
FALCONS EARN SPLIT WITH ETSU ON OPENING WEEKEND
BGSU opened the 2016 season with a 7-1 win on the road at East Tennessee State University. After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Falcons scored the game's final seven runs to pick up the victory. Sophomore Justin Mott singled home two in the fifth, while freshman Cam Daugherty's three-run double highlighted a four-run eighth. Juniors Nick Glanzman and Greg Basalyga pitched in with an RBI a piece. Redshirt-junior C.J. Schildt went five innings to earn the win, and senior Devin Daugherty registered the save by shoving four shutout frames. Bowling Green dropped Saturday's game by a score of 12-1, and Sunday's affair was cancelled due to inclement weather (rain).
SCHILDT PICKS UP FIRST WIN
Southpaw C.J. Schildt – a native of Hauppauge, N.Y. – earned his first win as a Falcon in his first-career appearance. After sitting out the 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, the redshirt-junior returned to the mound and pitched BGSU to an Opening-Day win on the road at East Tennessee on Feb. 19. In five innings of work, Schildt yielded five hits, while striking out four batters and walking one. After opening the game with two perfect innings, the lefty stranded a runner at second in the third. In the fourth, after allowing the lone run, he stranded two more runners on base by recording three-consecutive outs. In his last inning of work, with BGSU clinging to a 2-1 lead, Schildt recorded a strikeout in the fifth to leave a runner at third.
THE DAUGHERTY BROTHERS
In Bowling Green's Opening-Day win at East Tennessee, the Daugherty brothers – senior right-handed pitcher Devin, and freshman infielder Cam – took over in the later stages of the ballgame to lead the Falcons to a 7-1 victory. In his first-career plate appearance and in a pinch-hitting role, Cam worked a full-count before ripping a bases-clearing double down the right-field line with the bases loaded. The three runs gave BGSU a 6-1 lead in the eighth inning. Meanwhile, Devin was dealing on the mound, and worked four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the save. The righty needed just 32 pitches to get through the four frames, allowing two hits while striking out four and walking none.
GLANZMAN PACES FALCON OFFENSE IN JOHNSON CITY
Redshirt-junior Nick Glanzman led the Falcon offense over the weekend in Johnson City, Tennessee to the tune of a 1-1 series split. For the weekend, Glanzman hit .444 across nine at-bats, registering four hits and scoring two runs. Glanzman recorded multiple hits in both ballgames, going 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI on Friday, and 2-for-4 with BGSU's lone RBI on Saturday. In a 2-1 game in the eighth inning in Friday's (Feb. 19) win, Glanzman singled into right field to give BGSU a 3-1 lead, before scoring himself later in the game, as BGSU beat ETSU by a score of 7-1.
A NEW ERA BEHIND THE DISH
The catching position has been a huge strength for manager Danny Schmitz over the past several years. From 2012-15, two-time first team All-MAC selection T.J. Losby and current volunteer assistant Jeremy Shay – an All-MAC selection in his own right – held down the fort. Last year, Trey Keegan was named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 2015 MLB Draft. With huge shoes to fill, sophomore Justin Mott came through to open the 2016 season. Trailing ETSU by a score of 1-0 in the fifth inning, the young catcher poked a two-run single to give the Falcons' their first lead of the season. The hit turned out to be the difference in the game, as BGSU held ETSU scoreless for the rest of the contest en route to a 7-1 victory.
MINORIK MAKES FALCON DEBUT
In total, 10 players made their Falcon debuts this past weekend. But Riley Minorik – from Akron, Ohio – was the lone player to earn starts in both ballgames. Minorik earned the nod at second base both contests, and registered his first-career hit with a single in the fifth inning of Friday's game. Along with Minorik, seven other freshmen – Chase Antle, Brad Croy, Cam Daugherty, Logan Giddings, Blake Jenkins, Zach Kendall and R.J. Williams – made their Falcon debuts, as did JUCO transfers Dan Ferguson and C.J. Schildt.
CROY CAPTURES FIRST COLLEGIATE HIT
Freshman Brad Croy – who hails from Glandorf, Ohio – received one at-bat during the East Tennessee series, and he did not disappoint. Croy was brought on as a pinch-hitter during Saturday's (Feb. 20) loss, and promptly picked up a single in his first-career plate appearance. The freshman went on to score the team's only run in the ballgame later in the frame.
SCHMITZ ASSEMBLES STAFF FILLED WITH FALCONS
With the addition of 2014 BGSU graduate Jeremy Shay as volunteer assistant coach in the offseason, head coach Danny Schmitz's staff is now entirely made up of former Falcons. In fact, all three of Schmitz's assistants played for him during their careers at BGSU. All three also won a championship under Schmitz's guidance. Rick Blanc – who enters his 9th year on staff – was a part of the 1998 squad that won a MAC Tournament title, and participated in NCAA Regionals in Coral Gables, Florida. Ryan Shay – who completed his first season on staff in 2015 – won back-to-back MAC regular-season titles as a player in 2008 and 2009. Shay's brother, Jeremy, enters his first year on the coaching staff. Shay was a part of the 2014 team's Cinderella run late in the season that was capped by a MAC Tournament title and a birth in the NCAA Regionals in Louisville, Kentucky.
BGRSO TO PROVIDE FLAGSHIP COVERAGE FOR 2016 SEASON
On Feb. 9, the Bowling Green State University baseball program, along with the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization (BGRSO), announced that flagship coverage for the 2016 season would be provided on WFAL Falcon Radio. Links to all broadcasts can be found on BGSUFalcons.com. Fans can locate the links by clicking on the baseball team's schedule, and locating the select game.
DRAFTING FALCONS
Trey Keegan and Brian Bien become the eighth and ninth players across the last decade to be selected in the MLB Draft. Keegan was picked in the 14th round by the Atlanta Braves, while Bien was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 31st round. Both began their professional careers in 2015. Bien was promoted from rookie ball to full season Single-A ball, and finished the year with a .315 batting average. Keegan hit .267 with a .343 on-base percentage for the Braves' rookie-level club.
FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN MAC EAST
The Falcons were picked to finish third in the East Division, according to the conference's coaches poll. With 43 points, BGSU was picked above Miami (37) and Buffalo (22), and below Kent State (63) and Ohio (55). Central Michigan was picked to win the West Division. Kent State was picked to win the MAC Tournament, garnering four votes. Bowling Green received one vote to win the tournament, along with Ball State, Miami, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, while Central Michigan earned two votes.
FOUR CAPTAINS IN 2016
In early October, head coach Danny Schmitz announced that seniors Kory Brown, Devin Daugherty and Matt Smith, along with junior Greg Basalyga, would serve as the program's captains for the 2016 season. Brown served as a captain for the 2015 campaign, as well.
FORECASTING THE FALCONS' 2016 SLATE
Like most seasons, due to the harsh weather of Northwest Ohio, the Falcons will play 17 games away from home leading up to a March 15 contest vs. Central Michigan, which will serve as BGSU's home opener. In total, BGSU will play 56 games in 2016, with 19 of those ballgames taking place on Warren. E Steller Field. With the MAC's loss of Akron, the Orange and Brown will play 24 conference games. Bowling Green will also face a pair of teams that were ranked across most preseason Top 25 polls, when they travel to Michigan on April 6 and Florida State for a three-game set May 6-8.
BASEBALL INKS FIVE DURING EARLY SIGNING PERIOD
The Bowling Green State University baseball program announced the addition of five student-athletes during the early signing period. Alex Brinkman (RHP – Anna, Ohio – Anna), Damon Egnor (RHP – Paulding, Ohio – Paulding), Colton Flaherty (C – Newport, Michigan – Jefferson), Chandler Stillings (LHP – Findlay, Ohio – Findlay) and Jake Wilson (OF – New Lowell, Ontario, Canada – Nottawasaga Pines Secondary) will arrive on campus and join the program in the fall of 2016 as freshmen.Â
