Normal, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team earned a win Thursday night against Illinois State on the road by a score of 194.175-192.225. The Orange and Brown won vault, floor and the all-around in front of a crowd of 315 in Horton Field House.
Â
"It was a rough start on bars tonight, but the team battled back very well," said head coach Kerrie Turner. "I am proud of the character they showed to never give up and fight for every tenth. The win is a good accomplishment, however, we are going to have to work very hard on our next two meets to make improvements to our regional qualifying score."
Â
Heading into the meet with the Redbirds, Bowling Green was ranked No. 38 overall. The top 36 teams make it to the regional meet.
Â
BGSU trailed after the first two events, but were able to surge past Illinois State thanks to solid floor and balance beam rotations.
Â
Bowling Green began on uneven bars where the team had to overcome a few falls, but sophomore Laura Mitchell managed to place second with a 9.725 and sophomore Shannon Goniwiecha tied for third place with a 9.700.
Â
The team then moved to vault, earning its fourth best event score this season (48.725). The Falcons swept the first three spots with junior Lauren Feely recording a season-high 9.875, junior Victoria Heath earning a 9.800 and senior Alyssa Nocella vaulting her way to a 9.775.
Â
Knowing they were down going into the third apparatus, the Falcons put together a strong back half of its lineup to pull ahead following the event. The last four gymnasts to compete all earned 9.800s or higher. BGSU again swept the event, this time recording the top four spots. Nocella placed first (9.850), Feely and Heath tied for second (9.825) and freshman Kayla Rose finished fourth (9.800).
Â
The Falcons wrapped up the meet on balance beam with all five scorers earning 9.725 pluses. Senior Caroline Ellingboe and Mitchell tied for second place with 9.800s and junior Rachel Reis placed next with a 9.750. The team's event score of 48.800 is the team's fourth best this season.
Â
Nocella won the all-around with a 39.000 (9.775 vault, 9.650 bars, 9.725 beam, 9.850 floor) and Feely's 37.650 earned her a second-place finish.
Â
The Falcons complete their regular season slate with a dual meet against conference foe Northern Illinois on Saturday. The meet will begin at 4 pm and a senior day ceremony for Ellingboe and Nocella will take place following the conclusion of the competition.
