BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by the University of Dayton, 13-2, Wednesday (April 13) afternoon at Steller Field. Bowling Green climbed out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Flyers scored 13 unanswered runs to pull away with the victory.
"We played six innings of solid baseball," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But the final three innings – you just can't play like that. But we need to quickly refocus. This weekend's series versus Ohio is huge for our program. We need to make up ground in the MAC standings, and we are excited to play another MAC series at Steller Field."
Bowling Green has now lost five-straight ballgames, running its record to 11-22 on the season. The Falcons have 10 remaining home games, including a midweek game versus Youngstown State and three MAC weekends with matchups against Ohio, Northern Illinois and Kent State.
The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as Tyler Greiner lofted a sacrifice fly into left field. But Bowling Green could not get a base hit with runners in scoring position throughout the early stages of the contest.
Tyler Anderson got the start for Bowling Green, and pitched two innings of one-hit baseball. Mat Szabo allowed an unearned run in the fourth, which knotted the game at 1-1, prior to Rob Zenas pitching two perfect innings. Chase Antle then hurled a scoreless sixth, but things went terribly wrong for the Falcons in the top of the seventh.
Heading into the top of the seventh, Bowling Green was out-hitting Dayton, 7-1. In fact, Dayton had not registered a hit since the first inning. However, the Flyers went on to score seven runs on eight hits in the seventh inning to take an 8-1 lead. Dayton plated five more runs in the eighth, increasing its lead to 12 runs at 13-1.
In the ninth, Bowling Green's Joe McGuinness pulled an RBI double down the right-field line to conclude the game's scoring. Another highlight for the Falcons came from Mitchell Schneider, who recorded his first-collegiate hit in the ballgame.
Riley Minorik – who went 5-for-13 last week with two home runs – continued to stay hot at the dish. The freshman went 2-for-4 with a walk. He opened the bottom of the first inning with a 10-pitch at-bat before lining a single into left field. He later led off the bottom of the fifth inning with another base knock. Matt Smith also went 2-for-4 in the game. Bowling Green's two runs were scored by Greg Basalyga and Cam Daugherty.
The Falcons will open a three-game set with the Ohio University Bobcats on Friday, April 15. The ballgame is scheduled to begin at 3:05 p.m. Bowling Green and Ohio will conclude the series with 1:05 p.m. start times on Saturday (April 16) and Sunday (April 17).
